It was used to replace a hard twist shifter on my son's 20" bike. It was much more efficient than You can easily change up with a gray button and it's easy to do Pushing the down shift lever is required to down shift. At age 6, my son has a hard time downshifting to first. His thumb is not rather strong and he does not have the reach at his age to reach for the lever. Taking off the hand from the bar and pushing it back with his palm is the important step. This is neither safe nor ideal. Although it is hard to fault the shifter, it is important for parents to know what's going on. Even so, it is still a lot better than the twist shift that would never go into 1st, no matter how much you pushed it. If you wish to install the rear derailleur properly, you need to understand how to adjust it.
You may want to get this if your child's bike has the twist shift mechanism which is difficult for even adults to grasp. In fact, I got my child a 24" Huffy 18 speed 3x6 bicycle from the blue mega store and the bike functions perfectly apart from shifting. Even I struggled with twisting the shifter, the click and lever mechanism works much better than the twist shifter, shifts up and down can be done simply by clicking the lever, and shifting down requires a bit more thumb pressure on the lever to be effective. The current shifter was removed and this one was installed under the rubber handle, between the brake mount and the brake mount. You can purchase a similar shifter for the left handle bar mount on the front sprocket, I may upgrade that in the summer but for now we are just using the twist shifter, as those gears are not so useful for light cycling.
It was when I decided to pull out my 40-year-old Hardrock from storage that I found my rear shifter had snapped. The order was placed, but I was not looking forward to getting it setup. With the chain in gear 1, the shifter set to "1", the cable pulled taught and the cable locked I love it. I love shifting on this shifter, either down or up. It shifts fluidly every time.
This purchase has been a wonderful experience. Thus far, these shifters have proven to be simple, forgiving, accurate, and reliable. Only about five miles have been put on them, but they were flawless in the worst weather Chicago can throw at a component. This shifter has been used with the Shimano Tourney cage, which has been used for quite a while. I think we have worked together perfectly until now.
I have an old bike part as a spare.
It's a lot easier to install and is much better than the rotary gear shifter on my niece's trek bike. I would definitely recommend it.
The click shifter replaced the broken twist shifter on my son's bike, and now he loves it, and he no longer has problems shifting gears to go up and down the hill.
