As soon as I converted to an eBike, I installed one. If you are pedaling a lot, it is a must. I tow a trailer, so the motor is applying torque, and a few times my shifter hesitated, and I heard It is a good idea, in my opinion.

The connection is easy to make and plugs right in. As part of an upgrade of a 2014 Bafang mid-range system, we acquired this sensor Describe how the drive system works. It was decided to replace the BBS02 motor with a new BBS02B drive unit since the original BBS02 motor was skipping and sticking. I added it to the system with the new BBS02B since it has an input for this shift sensor. When the sensor catches movement of the rear shift cable (vertically up or horizontally down), it temporarily shuts off the motor. The sensor is mounted on the cable housing of the rear shift cable. Upon plugging the connected cable into the matching connector on the BBS02B, the wireless signal is immediately detected. This product smoothes the shifting of gears and reduces wear on a drivetrain. There is no way to tell how well it will hold up over the long term, but for now it gets 5 stars for ease of installation and functionality.

I believe it should have been sold as part of the Bafang motor kit as the motor is supposed to be sold as a unit.
An option that is required for Bafang motors. Drive train is prevented from being damaged by momentarily cutting power to motor when shifting.
When using a throttle, it is essential to have this device.
