On a bike I was repairing for a friend, I completely replaced all of the shift and brake cables with a kit I purchased for around $12. Two different cables and housing thicknesses are included in this kit, which makes it different from others. In the case of shift cables, the cable and housing are different. There are a lot of bargain kits on Amazon that only have brake cable housing and cable but will not give you the buttery smooth shifting you're looking for. As a matter of fact, I highly recommend investing in an aircraft style cable cutter to handle There is no way you can use the standard garage wire cutters on the sides without making a big mess and a lot of trouble.

This cable stopped working before it could even be used. Housing covers are made of too malleable plastic and suffer from tearing and splitting easily. There is no reason to keep selling this product. Before I took my bike out on the road, the housing on my bike split after I installed it. While it might look like a cosmetic defect, this is actually an important part of the brake system, since it allows the brake cable to be tensioned. It is not tension, it is not braking. In the event that the cable had failed during use, the result could have been serious. It is sort of important for bicycles to have brakes.

I was very pleased with it, but the kit was only a bit on the short side. Initially, I thought about taking it to a bike shop because it was frayed. It is not unusual for these repairs to be inexpensive, but when I discovered how inexpensive the cables were, I decided to do it myself. This cable kit comes with two derailleur cables and two brake cables, and they both seem to be of excellent quality. After cutting the brake cable thinking it was a derailleur cable, I realized it was short and I had to cut it again. Since all of the outer cables needed to be the same length, the internal cable would not reach the derailleur's tightening nut. In the end, I ended up taking off about three inches from the outer cable closest to the shifter and about two inches from the rear cable in order to make room for the internal cable, and even then it was barely enough to put through the bolt and to crimp the extra piece. Having such a small cable made tightening it a bit more challenging, since there was just a bit of cable left. Ideally, the cable should have been at least 4 inches longer, or at least 6 to be safe, but I would have liked it to be at least 8 inches long. A 10 would be good since this cable was too small for a medium-sized frame. If it were a larger frame, there is no way to tell. Having to recut some of the outer cable pieces after realizing they wouldn't work out was a little frustrating, but I liked that it came with the outer and end cable pieces. It was all good quality and the wire was good. It held together well, but it was.

We only have one minor complaint with our bikes (Giant). Shimano parts make up 90% of the bikes. There is a slight difference in circumference and height between the Shimano brake cable nipples (the barrel shape / not the pear-shaped end) which makes the brake housing bracket do not seat snugly or squarely with the cable. Our bikes have a little bit of twisting in the nipple and a bit of looseness. Although I haven't actually tried them yet, I'm concerned that they will work. If they don't, I will switch the inner brake cables with ones that are better fitting. I wish you the best of luck, your mileage There's a funny bit here. As a mechanic, I wouldn't have as much versatility as I do now. It is a good value for the price. housing of the shifter cable is difficult to cut with anything less than a high speed rotary abrasive cut off wheel or a good bicycle cable cutting tool.

Sizes of brake and shift cables and housings that are easy to cut with park tool cutters and I'm very satisfied with it, it's easy to install, it responds fast to my brakes and derailleurs, and it's long enough and has enough cable length for my large mountain bike. To replace all four cables, to adjust brakes, and to adjust the index gears, I spent less than an hour.
