Questions & Answers

What's the difference between the Mongoose Malus fat tire bike and the Mongoose Dolomite fat tire bike for men?

The malus is the most recent mongoose fat bike model. The weight difference is the most significant difference, aside from the malus's superior build quality. The dolomite makes use of some of the world's heaviest fat bike tires. Privately labeled panaracer fat b nimble tires are used by the malus. The weight of the tires on a fat bike is crucial for handling and acceleration.

I'm a big guy; will the tires be able to handle a 350-pound man? When I sattle, all of the other bikes appear to have flat tires. ?

My height is 6'2" and my weight is around 360 pounds. I have a Mongoose Beast, which is the first version of this bike (same frame, no gears, coaster brake), and it easily handles me. You must be cautious when it comes to tire pressure - I've seen far too many people try to pop the tire off the rim with 20psi or more, so I was hesitant to trust the 8-psi figure. The recommended pressure range is 11 psi. With a big guy on it, the tires will definitely feel soft, but that's to be expected with 4in or larger tires. You can buy tires with a harder sidewall, such as the Origin8 Devist-8er, but after figuring out the right pressure for the originals (about 10psi for me), I decided to keep the cheapies running as long as they would last. The show is still going strong. Not to mention - If you're also tall, you can get a 40cm seat stem to replace the 25cm stem that came with the bike. The 30cm one made the ride much more enjoyable.

Is 170mm the width of the wheel dropout? Will it work with an electric conversion kit for a fat bike?

This bike is compatible with 'Fat Bike' rear hub motors with a 170mm axle. I have two of these, one powered by a Magic Pie Vector (195mm axle) and the other by a 12t MAC geared hub motor (170mm axle). It's fine if the forks pull in slightly. After being pulled in for the 170mm motor axle, the rear break caliper only needed a 5mm washer on the rearmost bolt to properly realign. The frame triangle also easily accommodates an EM3EV 'Large Triangle Battery' (14s9p).

This bad boy has a lot of power! Love it! Look at me, I'm a colossus! In nearly three decades, I haven't ridden a bike
5/5

I did a lot of research to figure out what kind of bike I needed to get that would even come close to supporting me. There were a few that were in the $2k range. $4K. However, I purchased this bike based on the reviews and the price, and I rode it the same day. It has already gone above and beyond my expectations. The seat (cloud 9) and pedals were both upgraded. The handlebars will almost certainly be upgraded. But it was no problem for this 500-pound behemoth of a man to walk up and down the block. I'll keep you updated as the season progresses, but I'm looking forward to it. The tires did a fantastic job of protecting the vehicle. The sheer size of them astounded me. I've seen a lot of complaints about the bike's weight, but I'm not concerned about it at the moment. It appears to be adequate for my needs. Let's get this trip started.

For a fat man, a fat tire bike is the way to go
5/5

I'm a fairly substantial individual. 6'4" tall with a weight of almost 400 pounds. I bought this bike because I needed to start living a healthier lifestyle, and the low gears allow me to ease into it. The bike shop recommended that I upgrade the crank bearings, which I did, and the wheel bearings, which I did not. I am impressed with the heft of this bike; it easily handles my weight. The money spent on having it professionally adjusted was an investment in ease of use and well worth the price. When it's time, I'll upgrade those. The seat was a little narrow for me, so I added a "Cloud 9" seat to make it more comfortable. Aside from that, I have no complaints, and the tires make the terrain more pleasant to walk on. Dirt roads aren't a problem for you. I'm glad I went ahead and bought it.

This is a great entry-level fat bike at a great price
4/5

There have been a lot of changes, so please scroll down to the bottom to see the entire review: br>br>So far, I've only ridden this bike for about 60 miles, but here are my first impressions: I haven't taken it off yet because it's a lot of fun to ride. It's a nice looking bike, with much better colors than its brother, and it rides well on the road. It's a nice looking bike, with much better colors than its brother. As you can see in the photos below, I've made a number of modifications to the bike to make it far more capable. Basic mechanical skills are required for each of these tasks. Look for the thread "The dolo in the (semi) wild" if you want to see what other people have done with their bikes. Setup suggestion: br>br> br>Grease and adjust everything before riding it for the first time- I disassembled the wheels and reassembled them. They will have a small amount of grease on them and will almost certainly be overtightened when they leave the factory. Upgrades: br>br>

I had to replace a lot of parts to make it a good ride, but I had hoped to make it longer
3/5

After reading the reviews, I knew a lot of parts would need to be replaced in order for it to be a good ride, but I hoped to go for more than five days. br>br>When I got the box from UPS on Friday, it was obvious that it needed to be better packed for shipping. The derailleur was bent and pushed into the back wheel because the box was shipped lying down. I was able to pull it out and reposition it for the most part, but I should have sent it back right away. I rode 8 miles on Saturday and 8 miles on Monday, and it was manageable for the time being as long as I kept it in 6 and didn't shift gears frequently. It would work itself back up to 6 in about 45 seconds if I shifted to a lower gear, which was inconvenient but not disastrous for a part I planned to replace on payday. br>br>Fast forward to Wednesday, the day before yesterday. After work, I ride at a local park, which had a few more hills than the Saturday and Monday rides. I have to stand up about a mile and a half into the ride to get some extra leverage up the hill, and the derailleur breaks, throws the chain, and flips the bike over onto the wheel. I eventually work the chain back into place and milk it back to my starting point, where I can drive to a bike shop. br>br>After less than a week, I'm already dissatisfied with the quality of this bike and will be investing money in it MUCH sooner than expected. All of this could have been avoided if the bike had been properly packed and protected during shipping by the manufacturer.
