In the case of these, they are rated to hold enough weight to support the equivalent of a full-size person This should work fine in a sedan of about the same size. It says 22kN straight and 7kN 225 lb is about a kilogram, if I recall correctly. That's the case. A straightline weight of almost 5000 pounds and a lateral weight of about 1600 pounds. Mountaineering carabiners are rated for use on mountainsides.
In short, yes. Strength = 22 kN (4950 lbf) according to their website. If you want to load a carabiner along its long axis, then be sure you're moving along its long axis. It should not be cross loaded against its wire gate because that is not the axis that has to support the load.

Selected User Reviews For Metolius FS Mini Carabiner (2015)
The only time I do mountain climbing and cliff rappelling is when I am traveling. This is what I bought because the cheap store bought key clips were not working. I was getting frustrated with the flimsy gates on other carabiners sticking open and dropping my keys, so I upgraded to this sturdy piece of equipment. The card fob was several hundred dollars, so I did not want to take a chance. There is nothing I don't like about this carabiner. It's perfect size, it functions well, and it looks awesome! This gate is perfect. It is smooth and high quality, and I was worried it would be too big or the gate would be too stiff to work with keys. However, it's perfectly sized and the gate is stiff enough to use keys.
While I do not climb, I have biners like these and other screw gate binder all over the house for a variety of tasks. Using paracord to hang stuff off backpacks and hold things together can be a very useful camping activity. One is always in my keys' pocket, and I keep a few in my vehicle as well. Although they are not cheap, I think these are only a few bucks more than cheap key rings that only last ten years Ideally, I would like something that weighs 15 pounds and that is strong enough for me. It is these that I will always have Specifically this one is great for that since it is roughly two-thirds of the size of a normal screw gate and it has a nice finish. The wife has always used them to hang things off of her pack when doing Spartan races, and they have never failed. She has always looked good as well, which you know is essential The irony is hilarious.
Because it is rated for climbing (please check the specs) I sometimes use it for hanging heavier items. I always use it for carrying keys, but I'll occasionally hang heavier objects as well. I get a lot of use out of it since it's a great value for a real strength rated carabiner, plus it's not as heavy as industrial clamps, and it's easy to operate without accidentally doing it.
There are tons of these carabiners I have and I use them for everything except lead climbing. They're incredibly light and small in comparison to normal ear plugs. they are slightly undersized for climbing, especially with a thick rope, especially with one hand, since it is hard to clip on equipment while hiking, drop gear while canyoneering, and have them clipped to every pack you own since you will need them generally outside. These clips have been clipped to water bottles and used for hammocks, as well as rigging hand lines for sketchy sections. The only downside to this carabiner is that is not climbing rated, so they are safe around climbing equipment, so I bought this as a compromise. They are so light you won't realize they are climbing rated, but I have used them and found they work just fine.
This was bought by my girlfriend to hold her As with the one I own, the unit clips on well and keeps keys securely in place without being in the way. My jeans would probably work if I needed to tie them on a rope to help me in case of an emergency or to attach them to a winch when towing a car, but I certainly hope I'll never need to use them.
The color-coordinated racks are what I'm using to rack my cams. If you plan on using DMM cams, you can clip your rope to them if you want to (since they are fully rated). Those extra colors are used to rack gloves, a water bottle, etc. They are small enough not to add bulk to my rack.
I really enjoy using it. My keys go in there and it is way overkill but I am very confident that the keys won't fall off, and I won't lose my keys.
I wouldn't recommend this keychain for use as a keychain. What would make me deem it less than 5 stars if I dislike it as a keyring? Not at all!.
