Although it can be used to rappel, its primary purpose is to serve as a belay device, and there are better options.
The size of the rope hasn't changed; it's still an 8. 11 However, there is an anti-panic feature that will reengage the breaking assist if the lever is pulled too far.
The male part is a barbed piece inserted into the other piece of the plastic retainer. The male piece will pop out if you pull hard enough.

Everyone adores the Grigri, but I am a Grigri-only fan. Once you figure out how to use it, it's a fantastic device. I set it up backwards about 50 of the time, but that is easy to fix. Although the knob is difficult to turn, I rarely need to do so (never). I use it as part of my RAD system, and I'm terrible at it. It's almost defied my ability to mess things up so far. The only real issue I've had is with the instructions, which are utter nonsense. You can study the hieroglyphics, but you'll have to rely on guesswork and trial and error in the end. It isn't that difficult to figure out.
You can keep pulling down on the handle and feeding rope even after the panic break has set. I was expecting something similar to the Petzl ID's panic break. Very let down. I can't use it to teach my kids because it's dangerous.
I've never bought anything so amazing. Yes, it is pricey, but I would pay three times as much for a product that is as durable and dependable as this one. With this device, even complete strangers can belay me, and I will remain safe and secure the entire time.
This belay device is fantastic; it's very similar to the previous Grigri 2, but with a few key improvements. I like the top roping mode for gym use because it grabs quickly; I haven't taken it outside to test the lead mode yet, but I expect it to be just as good and make slack pay out much easier. I'm also looking forward to seeing how it wears with the stainless steel plate versus the grigri 2, which would wear out over time.
Great product; the Grigri Plus, in my opinion, is a must-have. It's ideal for pulling a climber from a tree in an emergency.
This product failed to release the rope when I was rock climbing with a friend. I'm not sure why it wouldn't, but it is extremely hazardous. I'll send an email to Petzl informing them of the problem. It isn't a dependable source of information.
I was previously using the black diamond atc, and this is a huge improvement; the autolock is incredible, and it saves energy by eliminating the need to use strength to keep the climber in place. I strongly advise it.
When compared to regular gri gri, it takes some getting used to.
