OBSOLETE! Suunto's support is coming to an end
3/5

UPDATE: It's a buggy mess about eight months after I bought the watch. Supporting software and migrating to a new platform is time-consuming and error-prone. And now the bluetooth syncing is broken, so I'm forced to connect it to my computer! This company should be avoided. br>br> I bought it as a replacement for my Garmin because of poor build quality and buggy software, but Suunto is far worse, and their products are utterly useless. Garmin is a more reliable company.

It's large, bulky, heavy, and obnoxious
5/5

It also functions as an excellent GPS watch. I decided to replace my 2-year-old laptop a few months ago. year- TomTom Runner is an older version of the TomTom navigation system. It was a good watch that did its job well, but TomTom simply did not develop the entire platform/ecosystem beyond basic hardware and a rudimentary web site for analyzing workouts over the last three years. I've been using swimming and road cycling as cross-training for the past four months. Training is beneficial. My old watch couldn't accurately measure either of these activities, so I decided I needed a newer, better watch. After that, I spent nearly a month conducting extensive research on the subject - I wasn't exaggerating when I said I was spending two hours a day on it. After all of that craziness, I narrowed the field down to the Ambit3 and Fenix3, which are head-to-head in terms of performance. Head-to-head competition on nearly every feature. br>br>However, in the weeks leading up to my purchase, it became clear that the Fenix3 had unresolved serious issues, and given that Garmin had provided virtually no response and it wasn't clear whether the bug was firmware fixable or if it was a hardware flaw, I simply lost interest. I'm not one to drop a few Franklins in the hopes that a developer will be able to fix a critical bug (which, as far as I know br>br>In any case, after deciding on the Ambit3, the next decision was which version (Peak or regular) and color (black, blue, etc. ) to get. I chose the Peak version after thinking about it for a day or so. First impressions: br>br> The timepiece is enormous. This isn't a subtle statement; it's a big one. I'm 5'10'' and 180 pounds, so it appears to be quite large on my wrist, but you can tell it's built like a tank and could withstand a lot of abuse: ) That said, you can tell Suunto's designers _attempted_ to make that monstrosity more presentable and portable. Gentle curves, the watch itself arches to contour the round shape of a wrist, and the straps are very comfortable and snug. br>br>The initial setup was extremely simple. In less than a minute, you can have your watch ready to go thanks to wizard-like steps and menus. br>br>*** IMPORTANT NOTE: UPGRADE YOUR Ambit3'S FIRMWARE VIA USB CABLE AND MOVESCOUT BEFORE TRYING TO PAIR IT WITH YOUR PHONE. **

br>This watch has an amazing level of customization and a ton of features you can tweak pretty much to your heart's desire, but As of this writing, the companion app for Android has yet to be released, so if you have an Android device, you may want to wait a few weeks before purchasing this watch. The iOS app is attractive and, once again, is the primary means of fully exploiting the features of your watch. Movescout is, in my opinion, an excellent website. I've seen workouts on Training Peaks, Strava, MapMyFitness, and other similar apps, but none of them are as well-designed and presented as Movescout. It has made me very happy. br>br>The GPS running/cycling tracking is fantastic and extremely accurate (as tested on measured paths). I haven't tested it on unmarked trails yet, so I can't comment on that. It is compatible with any Bluetooth 4 device. 0 devices, for example, my Sosche hearing monitor paired instantly and without issue, and the "smart-ish" watch capabilities are also a nice feature. It will display notifications as they arrive if it is connected to your phone. At least for me, this is a very helpful feature. 95% of my runs and training take place during the week and in or near the city, so it is great to be able to do that while also seeing who is calling or text It's rarely the case). It's worth noting that, unlike a full-fledged smartphone, the Ambit3 doesn't allow you to respond or control your music. can perform as a full-fledged smart watch. But having the notification covers 100% of my use case, so 1 from me br>br>There are also a slew of "apps" in movescout that you can "download" to your watch, and if you're tech-savvy, you can even make your own. br>br>The temperature/thermometer is consistently 10 degrees Fahrenheit higher than it should be. I haven't figured out how to calibrate it yet, but it's the only niggle I have. br>br>The compass works great and can be relied on at all times because it isn't GPS-based. It's very simple to calibrate. br>br>The Altimeter/Baromoter is a fascinating creature. It can be difficult to calibrate if you are not at sea level and the weather is good. You can use GPS assisted altitude, but that defeats the purpose of having those sensors on board. br>br>Overall, I'm pleased with my decision and would recommend it to others. My only caution is that you should not expect to use it as your "everyday" watch because, as previously stated, it is quite large.

With some seriously buggy features, this is a solid gos watch
3/5

If you want to track your progress while running, cycling, or hiking, this is the watch for you. It gives me accurate results of how fast I've gone and how much elevation I've gained when I'm cycling or mountaineering. This watch has three flaws in my opinion: The storm warning system is completely ineffective. Even though it's clear as day outside and the temperature readings are way off, every time I turn it on it turns off in about 5 minutes. When you take the watch off, it usually gives accurate readings, but when you put it back on, your body heat causes the temperature to rise by a good 10 degrees. Why bother with a temperature gauge if my body heat will have an effect on the watch? Finally, the calorie counter and step counter are completely inaccurate. Even if you don't wear the watch, it continues to track your calories and steps. This watch is excellent if you want a dependable gps watch that accurately records your movements and tracks everything you've done, as well as a solid compass and breadcrumb trail. If you're looking to track your steps and calories burned, this isn't the app for you. If you want to keep track of it, get a smart watch or a camera, or even an app. Even though this watch does exactly what I want it to do, I expect everything that has been advertised to me to work properly, and so far, a large number of features have failed to do so.

Ultra events require a longer battery life
3/5

Suunto has lied about the battery life of this watch yet again. On a brand new watch, the maximum GPS setting with no beeps and clear visibility of the sky only lasts 17 hours. Support claims that the 20-hour estimate is only a guess and that it can be met under ideal circumstances. Despite the fact that we were unable to duplicate the circumstances. I tried their reset method, which involves running the watch until the battery dies and then charging it for 24 hours. Everything was a load of nonsense. The bottom line is that it does not provide the 20 hours that it advertises. Otherwise, a nice watch with a battery life of 17 hours, which is better than the SPORT version but still insufficient for a slow ultrarunner.

Suunto Ambit 3 Peak vs
5/5

Fenix 2. This is the GPS watch to get if you want to go trail running or training. I also own the Fenix 2 watch, which appears to be the winner on paper, but after 6 months of crashing, losing tracks, and two races where the gps signal was lost, I am DONE with it. I've had the Ambit 3 for about two months and it's been absolutely fantastic. Would I prefer some of the Fenix 2's features over those on this watch? Sure, but the watch is far more dependable and accurate at the end of the day.

This is a fantastic watch that has a lot of uses
5/5

For the past week, I've been enjoying the watch and am impressed by its functionality. So far, I've only used it for running and cycling. The fact that the watch is linked to Movescount is a big plus. It's extremely comfortable and not nearly as bulky as I expected it to be, and it's easy to keep track of and plan workouts with com and their app. Whether or not I'm working out, I put it on every day. br>br>Among other things, the watch shows you your speed, altitude, location, and temperature. The only thing it doesn't show is your heart rate, which you can get if you buy a separate heart rate monitor. br>br>My favorite feature of the watch is that it allows you to download trail maps and other routes (cycling, running, mountain biking, etc. ) directly to your watch from Movescount. I plan to use it for hiking and trekking in remote areas where cell service is unavailable. br>br>UPDATE: br>br> I've been wearing this watch every day for almost a year now. It's in perfect condition. Still a strong recommendation.
