Questions & Answers

What's the difference between the Garmin Drive 61 lmt-s and the Garmin Drive 60 lmt?

How long should a fully charged battery last? My next-door neighbor claims that his only lasts 35 minutes. Is this something that happens frequently?

You can plug a cord into these to use in the house or to connect to a USB computer or plug; you do not need to rely on the battery. Because you usually use it in the car and it's plugged in, they make them with a short battery life on purpose. There's no reason these should have a two-hour battery life. In most cases, the battery life is only about 20 minutes. 30 minuets - There is no need for anything else!

Will this navigator let me pick my own route before I leave, or will it only show me the "quickest" route?

When you enter a destination, you will be given the option of selecting one of three calculated routes. If you want to create a custom route that takes you down specific roads, the device has a Trip Planner feature that lets you insert shaping points along a road to take a specific route.

Is it possible for you to upload the MyRoute app?

No, you won't be able to add any more apps or features to this device.

Updates, updates, updates
5/5

We just got back from a trip through Canada and the Rockies, and it was fantastic. The most important thing to remember when purchasing a GPS device is that it must be updated immediately after purchase. When you buy a new GPS unit or a "certified" GPS unit, it is ALWAYS back level. Many of the other negative reviews I've read are due to the fact that they are out of date. The maps aren't the only thing that has been updated. They are essential for GPS Operating Systems. This one has approximately 9 GPS Software Updates as well as a substantial Map Update. Updates are the keys to success, regardless of the brand name or the amount of money spent. I hope you found this information helpful.

After the USB connector failed, I had to replace it. I was very happy with the Nuvi 40, and it was a necessity for me to get one. This model of Garmin GPS was chosen to be tested. To be honest, it's a complete waste of time. br>br>Especially in more rural areas, the drive 51 is frequently inaccurate in indicating when to turn. Often, the unit will not recognize a turn until you are approaching or passing through an intersection. br>br>Despite setting the unit to avoid unpaved roads, it repeatedly directed me to them, especially in Vermont. br>br>The device frequently forces you to drive in circles; before returning to the necessary route. br>br>The touch screen is too sensitive, and you have to return to the correct screen all the time. When you need to charge other devices while driving in the car, you can't just use any old USB charger. You'll need to get a charger made by Garmin. , Oh, and if the lighter socket is right next to the gear shift, you won't be able to plug in the extra garmin unit until you're in gear. You'd think they'd designed it to bend 45 degrees or 90 degrees. This unit misses or misidentifies entire towns that appear on printed maps. You should always carry a printed map with you. br>br>Changing the route with this unit is extremely difficult. br>br>There are a few other things about this unit that irritate you. Look for a GPS somewhere else if you'll be traveling outside of densely populated areas. This unit, in my opinion, is far more of a risk than a benefit. Pay attention to the small print

Without a smartphone, there is no way to get traffic data! This was a Christmas present for my husband. We are dissatisfied, to say the least. Why did Garmin believe that requiring a smartphone to receive traffic updates was a good idea? If I have to use my phone, I'll just use Google Maps! The cable to receive traffic updates (without having to use your phone) costs $60! My old Garmin gets traffic without any additional apps, and I don't believe this "new and improved" unit is any better. br>br>Update: So we went out and bought a traffic cable, but it didn't work. We eventually discovered that the Garmin nuvi 3590LMT- was the model we had purchased. The GMT 60 was listed as a compatible traffic cable on the S packaging. THE UNIT IN THE 3590 BOX, ON THE OTHER HAND, WAS THE DRIVE 51 (the model I bought). It begs the question as to how the unit ended up in the wrong box in the first place - and if someone else's is messed up as well, see the photos attached. We'll have to pay for shipping to return the cable and buy a new one now. What a pain!.

For crossing the border into Canada, this is a must-have item
5/5

I recently had to travel to Canada for a few appointments, and this GPS has relieved me of a great deal of anxiety. You don't have to pay for extra data to use your phone to get directions; This GPS will keep you safe. Before purchasing this model, I owned an older Garmin GPS. Please be aware that older versions of the software will ask you if you want to disable the tolls in a list of things to avoid. After you enter the address, this model will PROMPT you. It will say something along the lines of "this road has tolls, do you want to continue or find an alternative route" or something along those lines. THE OPTION IS AVAILABLE.

Both the good and the bad are present
3/5

We appreciate the fact that this Garmin's display is larger than our previous Garmin. Some display elements, such as speed, have been reduced in size, while other functions have been enhanced. However, despite the fact that GPS is set up to do so, you don't always get the quickest route. I compared the route to my older Garmin and found that the new one has added anywhere from 10 to 15 miles. Not only does the ride take 60 minutes, but it also occasionally takes you off the beaten path rather than the direct route. This is a major issue when traveling thousands of miles. Another disadvantage is that if you don't change the city to which you're traveling before entering the address, the search is done for your tri-state area. Area of the state We updated the maps, but there are still issues, so we've gone back to our older, more reliable unit. Please, Garmin, fix these problems.

This is a fantastic resource
5/5

I usually use my phone to get directions, but it appears that using the phone's GPS system depletes both the battery and my data allowance recently. I finally decided to purchase a new Garmin (I had one a few years ago) because I figured it would pay for itself and be a better deal than increasing my data allowance. In a matter of months, the Garmin will pay for itself. This one is simple to operate and performs admirably. My purchase has made me extremely happy.

The maps that can be downloaded are currently unavailable
3/5

After comparing the capabilities of this unit to those of competitors, I decided to purchase it. The ability to use maps from different regions was a key feature that influenced my decision. A free app called Garmin Express is required to download a Garmin map onto the device. Unfortunately, Garmin Express does not allow the installation of new regional maps with the Drive 61 or 51 units as of the writing of this review. I spent several hours (the night before a trip to Europe) and an additional one hour attempting to make it work. On the day of the trip, I spent 5 hours with tech support. Tech support was able to replicate the problem with their own test unit and is working on a solution. Since then, my interactions with Garmin have been extremely professional, but also extremely disappointing. I've put in far too many hours over a long period of time, and I'm not willing to put in any more. I'm going to return it and get a refund. Garmin's response: Even though I was willing to purchase a dedicated device from you, my final solution is to use free offline maps from Google on the iPad I already own. So, this failure of the Garmin QA team results in the loss of a customer, lost revenue, and damage to your brand. Why wasn't this tested before the product was released to the public?.
