Yes, it is painful to the eyes. To keep the lantern from being too bright, I draped a white voile fabric over the top. Even at the third setting of 500 lumens, it brightens the room significantly. The lantern is of excellent quality, but the bulb should not be viewed directly.
The bottom of the lantern must be removed. Under the lantern, there are batteries.
When you press the rubber button, the lantern should light up. With each subsequent press, the light's brilliance fades until it's completely turned off. I'm not trying to be rude, but I'd double-check that all of the batteries are properly positioned with their positive and negative ends in place before proceeding. It's a good idea to understand how brightness is converted into lumens before purchasing any lantern. Even at full power, many of the lanterns are dim and wouldn't illuminate a large area. The brightness of this lantern can be adjusted from dim to bright. The batteries last a long time on low, but only a short time on high, which is why I gave it three stars for battery life. Having said that, the lantern appears to be of excellent quality. Fortunately, I have not had the opportunity to use it for its intended purpose, which was to serve as an emergency light during power outages caused by hurricanes, tropical storms, and other natural disasters; however, I have checked out the operation and it appears to be operating as expected on all levels. Although it is more expensive than others, the quality appears to be worthwhile. On a black surface, the battery indicators are difficult to see and read, so I made the'' and '-' with a white-out pen. ' D- The battery positions are easier to read and correctly insert.
