Questions & Answers

Do you think that this is a mantle composed of thorium dioxide?

Coleman doesn't seem to be able to provide a definitive answer. Although thorium was once a popular nuclear fuel, it has been phased out in favor of significantly less radioactive yttrium and zirconium oxides since the 1980s. The melting points of these alloys are 2500C and 2700C, respectively, rather than 3400C, so they can withstand the flame of a kerosene or gasoline fire, and are slightly more flexible when cold to prolong their life. I would recommend finding some 1960s or 1970s vintage Geiger counters for your experiment if you intend to do one A new generation in the 1980s The old-fashioned way Stock listed on an online auction website (e.g., It's Bay). You may want to consider purchasing a battery-operated LED lantern if you are concerned about cancerous radiation. It may be possible to sleep with a lantern mantle from the 1970s tucked in your pillowcase for a year and be less likely to contract There is no better way to cause radiation than to spend

What is the average lifespan of one of these?

The batteries should last a lot longer than 3 years It is possible to get 5 burns on them, but they change to brittle after the It is possible to have three tanks of fuel, but your mileage may vary depending on how much you use. The lanterns will not last as long if they are cranked.

Is this one of the ones that works?

I've never had any trouble using them. Three of my older lanterns don't have the fancy clips that the new ones do. The classic style of tie is the "tie on".

Does this stuff have radioactivity?

It was not uncommon back in the 1990s and earlier for these mantles to be doped with a radioactive thorium salt. This was a perfectly safe activity unless eaten. In addition to the alpha particles, the mantles emitted other particles which are incapable of piercing paper or During the 90s, Coleman switched to using yttrium and no longer used thorium mantles. Although the yttrium mantles are not as bright as the thorium ones, they are a little more forgiving and

However, the Coleman String Mantles do not live up to expectations
3/5

2 sets of 2 were provided by the seller Instead of 4 packs, you'll get 6 A pack tried to escape correcting the A fireplace with wire clips is much easier to install, although it is twice as expensive. I use a hanging propane lantern all winter long for heat. During the past two winters in the Lower 48, we have experienced similar conditions. The single mantle lantern uses 3,450 btu (a noticeable improvement in Big Wheel 1), and has a diameter of about 1 inch. An average 4 consumes a small amount of energy for 21 days round the clock. The tank has a volume of 5 gallons and a weight of 20 lbs. Propane is currently priced at $2 per gallon. In U-27 there is a 77/gallon charge You'll haul it. If one fills for $15 a week, he or she would heat for $5 more per week. (The electrician charges about $5 per day for an electric heater. 1) There is no app for the phone.

Mantles that fail to live up to expectations
3/5

Excellent all-purpose mantle that I use to set up and rebuild Coleman lanterns. I usually buy the mantles from Amazon, but I cannot always keep them on hand in A brief update Upon determining how durable the Coleman mantles are, I lowered my rating because of the price. It appears the Coleman mantles have become less durable as well. The mantles usually last for just one burn before falling apart. Half of the mantles get holes during the burn. It's been 40 years since I've used Coleman lanterns and never had an issue with the mantle I'm still experiencing today. I went with the peerless brand and have not had any issues with durability so far.

Mantles that attach to the back can last through a few adventures
5/5

Since stopping using the clips, I have stopped using The lanterns are put in hard shell cases and thrown into a troop trailer by our BSA troop. They will survive a few trips in the trailer as well as being tied to the I typically end up buying clip-on ones from the drug store that last only for a few trips.

For my Coleman Dual Fuel Exponent 229 backpacker lantern, I need these
5/5

The keywords to use for folks who have the Coleman exponent lantern 229 should be enough. In order to find a lantern mantel for my Coleman dual fuel exponent model 229 lantern, I am finding it increasingly difficult. The Coleman Standard String Tie #21 Mantle bundle I chose is as follows For the 229 lantern, I need 2 packages of 4 mantles (8 in total). It's a perfect fit and it works. Although I cannot find any of the #20 mantels, what is left in my camping box will be used as a backup in case I need them in the future. This is what you need if you need some. I would appreciate it if you could share with me and others where you found #20 mantles. Perhaps I will pick up a few more so I always have them.

Please be aware There is a problem with the batch of products
3/5

The mantles are genuine Coleman products for a decent price, but I question whether they are "factory seconds," that is, they may have a hidden defect. Recently installed two on my dual mantle white gas lantern and another on my single mantle white gas Despite my initial burn, only a third of the tiles appeared to have holes. As a result, the globe will develop black spots and uneven lighting will result. It was in the process of getting new ones, but I purchased this bulk pack so I have spares, so I don't have to use them all up all at once. For whatever reason, this batch is worse than the batch Coghlans had. I have changed dozens of these and never had any issues. The best are peerless and Coleman, but for whatever reason this batch is weaker than the batch Coghlans had. There is no point in sending it back as any evidence is practically destroyed. When items like this are available in my local sporting goods store, I will support them.

As always, Coleman delivers high-quality products
5/5

It is all you'd expect from Coleman affordable, consistent, and provided in one piece with no holes or missing string ties. All my mantles arrived in one piece with no holes or I have burned one pair for about 100 hours on my Dual Fuel Powerhouse, used it on four different camping trips, and been using them for about 4 months. Your lantern will last as long as you want it to, as long as you are gentle with it when transporting it. I've kept mantles on lanterns for over four years, and they really gave me a return on my investment!.

Item caught fire despite being asked about it
3/5

Purchased two packages of eight mantles as a In spite of the fact that it was many months ago, I decided to try a set on my lantern while picnicking in my garden on the 4th of July. lol. . . Those two mantles caught on fire. Despite my best efforts to purchase a mantle at Dick's, none was available. In any case, I just wanted to say hi. Make sure the item is in working order and try it out within the return window to prevent this situation from happening to you.
