Typo - It should be 17 inches wide.
The diameter is approximately 3 inches and the length is 17 inches. These are designed to fit on crossbars that are smaller in diameter, such as round or square. The aero pads are designed to be used with flat crossbars.

That might be a tight fit; my racks are Toyota factory four-runner racks, and I was barely able to wrap it around them and get them to velcro securely.

It's a decent pad. Inside, the padding is just a thin swim noodle; I suppose a thicker one could be purchased and placed inside, but the wide velcro keeps it in place well.
This will not fit my flatter roof racks, so I returned it and purchased a new set.
The bar is 5" thick. The velcro didn't quite make it around my 2 year old, so I had to return it. Toyota Highlander rack that is 5 inches wide.
So far, everything has gone well. Both the appearance and the functionality are excellent.

I wish it had come with instructions, but once we figured it out, it was exactly what I needed.
These do what they're supposed to do, and they do it well. My only gripe is that they don't fit on standard Yakima 2" round bars very well. They're too big to grasp the bar properly, so they'll turn and slide. br>br>Other than that, they're fine.
Over the course of six months, there was only a very slight fade. Pads are excellent. After six months in the Hawaiian sun, the color faded to a very light shade. These are for roof racks that have a 1" round bar. They are not compatible with blade-style racks.
