Questions & Answers

The distance between the two carry arms (the ends of the arms) is how far apart?

In the current hitch rack version (2016 and newer) there are 11 carry arms and their spacing is 11 inches. The spacing between the posts should be 5" Taking this measurement into account, the outside dimension will be about

In order to lock this rack, what is the best way to do it? Neither I nor my friends have ever used a hitch rack. ?

We purchased the doberman lock and secured the bikes and lock to the straight pole on the back. We have two interwoven between the wheels and the pole to prevent them from being stolen. As well as the locking pin, we brought an extra Our dog has never gotten trampled, we have left them on the trail while down the shore, on the bike trail when we walk, or picked them up on the way home.

The rack is designed to hold men's bikes, but how would you mount a woman's bike there?

It is fairly simple to change the position of the straps once you figure out the best position because the brackets that the straps are attached to rotate around the rack arms. It wasn't a problem for me to store three women's bikes on the rack. It seemed that the straps were attached to the diagonal bar and vertical bar below the seat and they were very tight, preventing any movement. We have no problems with women's bikes here at all.

When it comes to pin size, how big is it?

An eyelet in this rack allows for a 1/2" diameter pin to be inserted. There are a lot of hitches that have 5/8" pins. It is possible to use the "no-wobble" pin included with the rod (which is 1/2 inch x 5/8 inch), but then you will need tools to put it on/take it off. An after-market solution can be useful if you want to An overview of the market- When using this bike rack's locking pin, it will probably take you a minute to drill out the pin hole to 5/8". In my opinion, this is a poor design choice.

When Allen Sports failed in the first race with their brand new bikes, they said tough luck, and will not sell parts
3/5

I bent down one of the bike rack's bars more than four inches on my first trip. I didn't even reach the speed of 60 mph with the rack. The Allen Customer Support was unaware of my problem and did not respond. The response stated that it would not resolve the problem. Even replacement parts will not be sold to me. The risk was viewed as Several other reviewers have cited Allen Sports customer service problems, echoing previous complaints about Allen Sports and their poor customer support. Stay away from this bike rack. It should be possible to transport two aluminum adult bikes in a hitch bike rack without breaking it. INVEST IN ALLEN SPORTS If you can help me resolve this issue and turn this bad experience around, that would be great. If you would like to update this review, I would be happy to do so.

An assessment of long term issues
5/5

The Allen bike rack we bought on Amazon for more than three years ago ( July 16, 2015) and I decided to write a review about it now. Please feel free to view my photos to observe how this clock is handling the constant exposure to the sun and the frequent use it gets. It is rarely ever removed from the bike rack since we leave it on all year round. In this picture you can see that the handle is finally succumbing to the sun and a piece has broken off, but otherwise it hasn't affected functionality whatsoever. One thing we do is ride our bikes It takes place three times a week, if the weather permits. This bike rack is constantly used for accessing the hatch door of the SUV to load groceries, equipment, etc. We also use this deck to load skis during the winter when combined with a Yakima ski rack (see photo). All things considered, everything seems to be holding up well! My thoughts regarding the bike rack design are as follows Simple and elegant, this bike rack is a favorite of mine. The fact that it does not have these seats is actually a plus Prior to getting this rack, I never had tube stabilizers since they were in the way when I was removing or mounting my bikes. your bikes to remain anchored to the rack during the car's braking and acceleration, simply leave a bungee cord in the vehicle. After strapping the bikes on, use the bungee cord to pin them to the rack. This is an easy process. It's difficult to tell if there is a negative, but there is a little play in the top swing arm (the U-shaped arm that bikes are resting on). When you accelerate from a stop light, you can hear it clank a bit. It's easy for me to give this 5 stars since it's so inexpensive. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

This isn't bad, but you need to understand how it works before you buy it
4/5

Using this product for a few weeks before writing my review was necessary because I wanted to give folks a chance to decide if this was the right product for them before they spend their hard earned money on it. For starters, it is my intention to use the bike rack as described. As we normally travel only about 10 miles to where we ride, I have it attached to the hitch of my pick-up truck. Here are its pros In addition to the 4-foot, I also bought the 3-foot Rack for bikes with deluxe features at a really low price. 68 dollars was the price I paid. I bought it for $3. 00 when it first came out. It has doubled in price since then. I suggest not spending more than $68 on it. The price will go down again so you can get it for $0. 00. In the last few days, I have seen this happen. The truck bed is fairly solid, and it is well built, but I only use the truck bed when I need it, so I cannot comment on its ability to withstand the elements in the long term. As far as durability goes, this is remarkably durable due to its heavy steel construction and the fact that it is not lightweight. A padded cradle that holds the bike frame can be swiveled 360 degrees so it can be used on bikes with odd shapes and girls frames without having to purchase an additional support bar for a girls frame style bike to use the The tension bolt (bolt and nut) is used instead of a locking pin to fix it to the receiver, so it eliminates rattles. In this case, there are both positives and negatives to this mounting system. In addition to its pro of stopping the bike rack from rattling inside the hitch, it also offers a great deal of convenience.
The bike frame supports fold down, so it takes up less space if you're keeping them mounted to your vehicle. This helps you store it when not in use or to store it away when removed. I have found that the straps and buckles to date have been adequate for keeping the bikes anchored. If they were left out in the sun and weather all day, I am unsure of how they would last. A third feature is that it swivels down at the lower joint in addition to folding the arms of the bike support. If you were to open the rear door of a hatchback-type SUV, you would need to do this. Cons I think you can only design any hitch mount bike rack to do so much as I list the cons below. Keep in mind that I don't think this particular rack is terrible I just think you can only design a hitch mount bike rack to do so There isn't much that can be done to address some of the cons listed below. A couple of things about this installation the bikes are parked In other words, every time you add a bike after the first, you have to adjust the pedals, handlebars, etc. The list goes on. As you stack the bikes together, they do hit each other. To prevent your bikes from scratching each other, you will need extra bungee cords to secure spinning wheels and handlebars turning from side to side. This is not because the bikes will come loose, but so they do not constantly contact each other. Also, the bottom of the bikes swings forward and backward off of bungees if they are not The pedals and bar end up scratching no matter how carefully you mount things. The pedals and bars are very close together, so they may rub against each other. Having to deal with that is inevitable. * * * In my opinion, the pivot feature is useless when a bike is As a result it would be very difficult to lower the rack when four bicycles are mounted and a hatchback needs to be opened on an SUV. I don't think it should be lowered when bikes are mounted (but then maybe it's not supposed to). As far as I know, I have not tried this, but it would have to be extremely heavy and I am not sure it would lower down enough with bikes mounted to clear an SUV It's on a pickup, so it's not a concern for me. The con side of the tension bolt is that it cannot be easily removed like a hitch lock, for example. It is, in fact, a locking nut that must be removed from both sides because it is an aircraft style Furthermore, if someone wanted to take the time, they could take your rack away from you by unbolting Having tried mounting it with a hitch lock, there is far too much room for movement in the bike rack, causing it to swing and rattle around a lot. In the meantime, we'll just have to rely on the tension bolt. Finally, where the bike support arms are mounted to the upright, there is a small amount of side-to-side movement. This area could have been made to be a bit more solid and have less play to it, but I don't think it would be an issue with it Those are the major points I noticed when I used mine. As far as this type of rack is concerned, I could see some small improvements. However, I'm not sure how you could change it much to make it better. Decide if the product is right for you by reading the review.

I have both Thorules and I do not think it is worth the extra money
5/5

This rack is similar to the $250 Thule rack I own. In light of reading reviews, I took a chance on this rack since we needed another one. However, the Thule is better made, and it's not really necessary to have extra beef. It isn't always necessary to overbuild. Despite being lighter than other racks and folding flat for storage, this rack is still advantageous. A number of reviews mention an issue with this rack. An ordinary 5/8" hitch pin will not fit the hitch pin that comes with this product. It measures about 9/16", so you have to use the included pin. Item#60379. Harbor Freight Step Drill Bit Set is available for $10 at Harbor Freight. It will take about three days This rack can be attached to a hitch with any standard hitch pin. In minutes, drill out the 5/8" hole. Then I did what I had to do. Moreover, we have a set of step drills that will come in handy for all kinds of projects around the house, especially when drilling sheet metal duct, electrical wire, or plastic. In addition to this, the bike rack is a little loose in the receiver, but a couple of wraps of electrical tape made it stable. Please see issue #3, as we have four mistakes in our presentation. During assembly, make sure to place 3/8" flat washers under the bolt heads and nuts to prevent scuffing the powder coat. The washers are not included with the sale. There is one feature that is common to this rack as well as the Thule rack the hinge pin, which allows you to open the hatch door by rotating your bikes away from the vehicle. This feature allows you to rotate the bikes back up and put the pins back in with the assistance of two people. A lot of value for the money, in my opinion.
