If you have a 17-year-old calf, The XL will fit perfectly; they're a little tight to put on at first, but once they're on, you'll forget they're there. Mountain biking is how I use mine.

Is it possible to wash and air dry the actual shin guards? The "pads" are machine washable, according to the product description. Is it the sleeve they're talking about?

Yes, we wash them on a regular basis; these shin guards are fantastic!

They're good, but they're not as protective as traditional shinguards

I wouldn't feel comfortable using them against people wearing cleats, but I like how light they are and think they'll do the job indoors. Not as sturdy as regular shinguards, but I use them for futsal, so it's fine; I can easily feel the difference just by hitting them with my hand.

For girl's soccer, it's not good enough - awful! My daughter's shins are not protected at all by these

I bought it to go mountain biking with. You'll understand why if you've ever ridden a pair of flats. These are super light, and they fit right under my long socks, but they're thick enough to protect your shins from the inevitable pedal strike. I wash them after maybe three uses, and they've held up beautifully. Get them!.
