Although it is currently the defacto standard, I think there are better alternatives

There is nothing better or safer than this standard. I like it and it protects you, but I have moved on to a different one For me, a longer chest guard is preferable to one which protects from belly blows. Unlike the last one, this one stops short of the belly and leaves the bottom of the rib cage I know mine is the right size, it's just the shorter design I dislike. It was measured by a professional umpire, so I know it is the right size.
