This is a size that is appropriate for small boys. However, it does run a tad small. In little boys, I'd say it's more of a medium or large size. My fifth-grader normally wears a size XL in boys' clothes, but these are far too tight and lack any give.
It depends on the shorts' size and the adult's size; I bought a size 8 and they were a little big on my average-sized 6-year-old.

These are very well made, but they run a little large. However, the drawstring on the waist works perfectly.

NOT BOYS. Because Large was listed as a 14-inch size on the size chart, 16 These are for my 13-year-old son, and I ordered them for him. LITTLE BOYS are the target audience for these. Even so, they are rated a 6 in the Large category. Returning and being let down.
To, I placed an order for a large. The size of something can fool you. I ordered a large and was disappointed to discover that they were a size 6 rather than an 8 or 10.
It would have been exactly what I was looking for if I hadn't ordered the wrong size.
