Questions & Answers

A deluxe universal rear bag with a lower profile is also available. Which rear bag would you choose and why if you could only have one? Thanks. ?

It all depends on what you're working with in the beginning. In my case, a tripod is used. On the back, I need as much height as possible. If you're going to use sand bags or something else that's not a tripod, go with something that's not a tripod.

if the bag is pre-filled at the factory? It says it's factory filled in the description, but the picture of the box says it's empty?

It was full when I got it. There was no need for me to add anything.

These seem to fall apart quickly, I hear. Has anyone else had this happen to them? How long are they going to last?

I've had mine for 6 months and they're still going strong.

What is the distance between the bottom of the V and the base?

Caldwell's Rear Shooting Bag with Extended Height
4/5

It gets four out of five stars from me. Caldwell's Extended Height Rear Shooting Bag is the subject of this review. It gets four out of five stars from me. br>br>I needed a tall rear shooting bag to go with my Caldwell "The Rock BR" shooting rest; I already had low and medium rear shooting bags, and I needed something taller for rifles with extended magazines, and the Caldwell extended height rear shooting bag fit the bill nicely. br>br>There isn't much to say about a shooting bag, but a few measurements would help you make a better decision. "The bag is fantastic," for example, isn't enough. It's the equivalent of claiming that my dog has two ears, one on each side of its head! (I suppose not everyone's elevator goes all the way to the top floor. ) )br>br>Now that that's out of the way, here's what you should know.
Note: "Think made in China!" when it comes to the materials and construction. "br>The base measures 5 by 7 inches and is made of suede leather or a similar material. br>The main bag is 6 1/2 inches tall when fully stuffed. br>The bag's ear section is 2 inches tall. br>The "V" part of the bag's bottom is 6 3/4 inches tall. br>The bag stands 8 1/2 inches tall in total. br>The main body of the bag, as well as the rabbit ears, are made of Cordura. br>The rabbit ears' top black portion appears to be made of leather or a similar material. br>br>It appears that the black leather is the bag's weak spot. It doesn't strike me as being particularly substantial. I believe it could be torn by something with an edge, such as a sling swivel stud. To keep the bag from tearing, I cut a small rectangular piece of dress leather to fit into the notch. Dress leather is available for purchase online or at a tack shop. It's also possible to obtain/cut it from an old leather handbag. If it's dried out, all you have to do is use leather softening or Baby Oil on it to bring it back to life; remember, it's easier to prevent the bag from tearing or ripping apart in the first place than it is to sew it back together later. br>br>The bottom line: If you take care of this bag, it should last you a lifetime; I deducted one star for the chincy black leather. br>br>However, if you want a bag made of higher-quality materials, you'll have to pay a lot more than 715 Pesos. (At the time of writing, the exchange rate was 37 dollars. ) )br>br>Of course, you could always sell your mule to Sister Sara for a fistful of Dineros if you decide to upgrade your bag. If you've read this far, I appreciate it. I sincerely hope you found this review useful. br>Laterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

What you pay for is exactly what you get
3/5

So far, it's served me well in my limited usage. The product came in a clear plastic bag when I first got it. From the shoddy seams, a tablespoon of sand had spilled out. The item was way overpriced. The sand had probably leaked out because the container was not fully filled. It was as if it were made of stone. I removed some of the sand to what I consider to be a sufficient amount of packing, allowing the ears to be used as designed (pinched). br>br>Now, let's talk about the product's quality; as previously stated, the stitching is shoddy. While I have not experienced any tears, I believe others who claim that the seams on theirs tore. The leather on top is actually vinyl, and it's very thin. Make sure the stock you're using on this bag is smooth; otherwise, the ears will rip. My stock slides (rather than grabs) when I shake baby powder on it. br>br>Next time, I'll probably opt for a leather bag from Protektor. They're a little more expensive, but they're of much higher quality. I'm kicking myself for being so cheap. br>br>5/21/17 UPDATE: Since then, I've upgraded to a Protektor Model rear bag. It's MUCH better, and it'll only set me back $4 more than this dreck. I've included some images, including one that demonstrates what you can get for an extra $4.

Although the design is good, the execution is lacking
3/5

I use it with a Caldwell Rock BR front rest because the shape fits all of my rifles and the material is excellent. This bag's design also makes changing the amount of media inside it simple. Unfortunately, after only a few uses, the front stitching came apart. To keep it together, I used caulk, which appears to be working. I would have given it more stars if it hadn't come apart at the stitching during my first use like a Caldwell front rest bag I own. I thought it was a one-time occurrence, but now my second bag has done the same. This should not happen because I am very gentle with my belongings - At least for the time being. br>br>Recent changes: br>br> br>Well, it's been 8 months and I'm still in love with the bag. Unfortunately, another seam is separating right where the stock is located. At the very least, because it receives the most contact and use, it makes sense. I haven't caulked it yet like the other seam, but I intend to do so and continue to use the bag because I like how it performs.

It works great, but it was defective when it arrived
3/5

I needed a mid-sized height, and this fit the bill perfectly. There's a walnut or corn filler in there somewhere - In that state, it's not very stable. I'll have to go out and buy some sand to fill it. One of the bottom seams was stitched too close to the edge, resulting in a small hole, which now leaks. Since it's been 30 days since I bought it, I'll have to sew it myself. Caldwell is a good brand to use once it's been filled with sand and restitched. A four-star rating is appropriate.

The most effective rifle rest- I've had my share of ups and downs in my life
4/5

Excellent items. As a Father's Day gift, I received a combination Universal rear bag and Rock rest. I must confess that I made a suggestion to them. br>br>I am extremely satisfied with the quality of these items. Everything appears to be of the highest quality in terms of materials and workmanship. The Rock Rest gets its name from this notch. br>br>As others have pointed out, the Universal rear bag is insufficiently high. The muzzle of any of my rifles mounted properly on the rests points skyward. My simple solution was to cut a couple of 2"X6" pieces to fit the size of the rear bag's base and connect them with screws from the bottom. Finally, I applied a flat black paint finish to them. This riser provides me with enough height at the rifle butt to allow for plenty of minus elevation adjustment at the front if necessary. It took roughly 15 minutes to complete. It only takes 20 minutes and it actually looks cool. Caldwell sells these two items together for some reason that I don't understand. It's time to get a bigger bag. It's not going to work. By any stretch of the imagination, this is a deal breaker. Oh well. br>br> This setup is fantastic; the rifle is held by the front ears, and the rifle is rock-solid. When properly placed, it is rock solid and will not budge.

It's not worth the trouble
3/5

This bag is much smaller than it needs to be for its intended purpose. There's also no way to keep the media in the ears, as there is with all rabbit ear bags. Because I prefer the weight of playsand, I use it in all of my bags. Perhaps a bead fill would be better for this one so that the ears actually do something. Overall, it's way too expensive for what it's supposed to be used for. The three bag sets with leather accents are far more affordable. It'll undoubtedly last a long time and is well-made, but it's simply too small.
