Questions & Answers

This rest will surely take a beating from a 300 ultra mag, but can it withstand its impact?

The sled is loaded with 20 lbs of weight, and I haven't experienced any problems or sore shoulders while shooting 20 full rounds of 300 WSM.

Can this be used for a SavagePrecision. Could you please specify the barrel length of the 338 Lapua?

A forefront larger than three inches is acceptable. Using this cradle you will not be able to fit a child 25 inches high. Those who are too big cannot shoot the Savage 338 LM or the Barrett 416.

Is the length of the front cradle (front to back) approximately 76"? Could you please tell me if my AR-15 forend will fit with my Magpul hand guard? Thank ?

The length from the butt to the cradle is 23". A height of just 8" to 10" is the front cradle.

Do DFT 2's shot bags come with it?

It is necessary to purchase each 4 of them are needed. There are three in this set, each holding about 25 pounds. Lead shot is a type of Your rest will remain stable during shooting so you won't have to adjust it. I find it extremely frustrating to zero in a new optic when it isn't perfectly centered.

I got it last week and had it assembled the next day
5/5

The material is solid, the construction is well made, and it is easy to adjust. To keep track of my time at assembly, I did the following This included unwrapping the parts, which took 43 minutes. About five minutes were lost in finding the screw that holds the front cradle of the RAM in place. Number one, of course! In my shop, I have 6 mm screws that I can use to complete the installation, but unfortunately the packager left it out. While I was checking to make sure my screw was the right size and length, I discovered that the "missing" screw was already threaded into my It is a simple matter of taking it out, securing it with the cradle, and screwing Thank you for packing this. I apologize to the kind person who packed it for me. Every piece of the puzzle was I had no trouble assembling it. For more room to work, make sure you run the ram all the way up to the top to fasten the top portion of the front cradle. Start the screws with one of the included hex wrenches or use a screw driver to keep the clamp in place until you get the screws threaded and it should be easy enough to thread the screws. After finishing this step, I turned the rest of the sheet over on its side. Can you explain to me how it works? You're doing a great job. It is not the first time I have used one. A few weeks ago, I had helped another individual sight in his rifle at the range. My purchase of one seems to have been triggered by that. Lead sled is relatively heavy and I was inspecting the sight in of an old (and unfortunately now obsolete) model at the time. In two shooting experiments at 200 and 300 yards I used a low recoiling 225 Winchester rifle without additional weights, and I am not planning on using additional weight for heavier rifles. There were no backlashes in my adjustments, which made them easy and straightforward. Although I generally found it necessary to reset it between shot, I have never used a bench rest that did not require me to adjust it. Once I got into position, it was easy to precisely set the crosshairs on the target. They remained in place as I moved It took me a few tweaks to set the sight in at 200 yards, but I was able to hit my target at 300 meters (330 yards) with my last two shots so I've got hope for it. Despite being elevated, I didn't feel any wobble in the front cradle. As far as Caldwell's website is concerned, they've sent earlier versions to correct the problem. I noticed that I had to gently push the ram down when near the bottom of the ram when I first assembled it, but felt no need to do so after I loaded it with a rifle. After lubricating it, I caused no problems on the range. There is a thick recoil absorbing pad in the rear cradle and that results in a longer length of pull and I had difficulty getting my eye close enough to the scope to get a clear shot. There is not a removable pad on that carpet. I dropped my rifle in it to clean it last. Because it is built in such a way, all my rifles are secure in it, which I cannot say about other rests I have had. Buying it for this reason was one of my reasons for buying it There isn't a huge difference between the price and some plastic vises available today. With regard to the rubber holddown strap, I didn't bother with it. It is not expected to be very useful for most people. For all of my rifles, even those with thick, flat forends, I set the cradle below the top of the forend, so the strap would be higher than As far as the rifle is concerned, I hold it down with my left hand with a bench rest. It is made in China, but it is made of steel and is very In addition to the ability to adjust the distance between the front and back cradles, I also purchased it for that feature.

The right compromise has to be between adjustability and simplicity
5/5

As a comparison between the Lead Sled 3 (LS3) and the Lead Sled DFT 2 (DFT2), I'd like to explain It is in its simplicity that the LS3 really shines. The unit is smaller and easier to manage. There is much less adjustment than with the DFT2, but that means it is easier to use. I have been using the system for quite some time, and it is quite good. A key feature of the LS3 is its ability to take advantage of simple, stable 25 pound barbell plates. Spilled shots or other mishaps are a thing of the past. I would recommend that you take care not to drop the plates on your foot (just saying). LS3's feature of that kind has long been one of my favorites. A comparison between the LS3 and the DFT2 will reveal that the LS3 offers simplicity, while the DFT2 offers versatility. A few of the features of the DFT2 are adjustable The shot can be adjusted and maneuvered right to the center without ever having to remove the sled from the rifle (the LS3 is not strapped in). DFT2 has a much larger footprint than LS3 in terms of both volume and area. Weights are also used in the form of lead sacks. The sacks of lead may not make sense when cast into the weights of a barbell, but when dropped, they are among the most effective training equipment. You can drop a sack of lead on your foot and it will be fine. If you drop a 25 lb steel disk on your foot, you will probably break a toe It is a good quality build for both Lead Sleds and they function well. Simpleness and ease of use are two things I like about the LS3. It makes my friend (a long range shooter) very happy to be able to adjust the DFT2. It's hard to pick a better option out of these two. Here are some choices you can make A simple design or an adjustable design.

An item that is not designed for bench rest use
3/5

The pieces are easy to put together. The construction of this product is pretty sturdy. Although the rear elevation screw causes instant windage error when adjusted, it cannot be There are too many fine adjustments to the front elevation wheel when you're shooting past 100 degrees. There is not enough room for my rifles to be held down by the "hold down strap. ". Although my tray held 50 pounds of shot, I still managed to hit it on target. Every shot the rest of the group took caused the 243 to move backwards. When you fire the rifle, the inner rear cushion will kick the rifle forward by an inch or more. I am disappointed in the overall outcome.

There are problems with Caldwell DFT2
3/5

Eventually, I had to rap it with the palm of my hand in order for it to retract. I disassembled the unit and discovered that the ram hole had broken through the upper side-plate assembly. There were obvious marks from a dull reamer or bit that caused them to become severely burred. Because of this, the ram was unable to move freely, so I polished most of the burrs and score marks away. As I turned my attention back to the ram, I saw the white side of the animal. There was chromium on the keys, but the chrome was chipped and rough - specifically in the tension key key. To prevent the tension key from sliding in the keyhole, use the following method It contributed to the binding I was experiencing in part by allowing my body to move freely. After reassembling and lubricating the elevation mechanism, the system now works much better, lowering by gravity or raising by turning the hand wheel. I really appreciate it.
(3 All My 22-year-old son is in my car Putting the cheap plasticised retaining strap on the Savage Varmit rifle for a fit check, the plasticized strap broke in half as I secured the front end of the rifle My strap was falling off the head of the DFT2 so I called Battenfield customer service. They said they had not received spare parts for the DFT2 yet, but would mail me a new strap once they arrived. In any case, the DFT2 is well built, windage adj works well, and the elevation adjustment works fine, but it is not particularly exceptional. While there is no side to side foot adjustment on the DFT2 like on older DFTs, some have complained about its lack of this feature in the DFT2. Caldwell could at the very least have polished out the ram hole and keyway for this rifle rest for the amount of money it costs. The feature could have also been incorporated with a true up and down geared elevation. My main reason for giving this product just 3 stars is because of the poor machining of the ram assembly and the breakage of the retaining strap. Caldwell needs to improve elevation control and clean up their machining, and this DF2 would be a 5+ in my opinion.
