The gray version of the photo I ordered was a disappointment, as I was concerned with it also. I was very satisfied with it, it's a little darker gray than the stock photos show (when they show a gray one), which I was happy with.
If you remove the barrel assembly from the buttstock, you find that the assemblies remain separate and that there are no attachment points to keep the two sections together. An installation of a sling swivel is difficult due to the protrusion visible on the lower rear of the butt stock.
If you have an issue and Magpul's support can handle it, it's probably just a simple matter of replacing the parts.

As a teenager, I bought the Ruger 10/22 Takedown, Magpul Backpacker, and it seemed like a great idea at the time, with magazines stored in the stock and the barrel tucked under the stock. As soon as I got to the range, I realized that the Magpul Backpacker LOP was way too short for me and my long arms - I continued to look for a longer model - I'm experiencing a lot of discomfort. In comparison to the stock that came with my 10/22, this stock has a great deal more comfort. The reason for me giving it two stars is because all the promotional material for the stock shows it as having a long magazine release, but it does not come with that. Magpul items are of good quality, as you would expect. I had no problem getting the receiver assembly to fit. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow. Having a short butt length was a problem I had with my factory stock. There were two uninstalled butt extension spacers included in the package. They were an excellent fit, and I ended up using them. It is also nice to have fitting options for both regular and bull barrels. The fact you can choose without having to purchase extra pieces is nice. * * * Bottom Line Recommended.
Installation instructions are very clear, so it's very easy to do. This pistol grip angle is more vertical so it is more comfortable to hold. This stock is very pleasing to the eye and feels great. I was also pleasantly surprised by the quick delivery.
I can use my 10/22 takedown tactical with no problem. As a result of this, I am hitting 3 MOA at 100 yards with the Ruger BX trigger. At 50 yards, it is about two MOA. Although it is a small scope, it can squeeze into the case the gun comes in just fine, even with a small scope.
