A guide would have made it easier for me. In my case, it was much harder to keep a right angle with a benchtop angle set. Even though this takes a bit to sharpen knives that are quite dull, some reviews make it sound as if it buzzes off all this material. It's actually quite gentle on the blade, so if you have a dull knife you might have a hard time damaging it.
In terms of the belt sizes, you can find them elsewhere if you'd like, but very few are made to these.
I don't change the belts for different grits because it works well. Due to my accustomed use of coarse belts, I did not have to waste my money on belts that I rarely.
