Questions & Answers

I just got a guided field sharpener, but I'm not sure how to use it. ?

Push the blade down the diamond plate (grey part) with the edge facing away from you. There are two diamond plates, one coarse and the other fine; you can tell which is which by running your finger down them. br>Use the yellow guides on the sharpener's ends to determine the angle at which you should sharpen your blade. As you slide the blade down the plate, maintain that angle the entire length of the plate. Allow the plate to do the work instead of pressing too hard. If you press too hard, the edge will roll, making it more difficult to achieve a sharp edge quickly. Check for sharpness by running the blade across the plate 10 times on each side. Rep until the edge is exactly where you want it to be. When you're satisfied, use the ceramic rod (it has three sides-- smooth, ridged, and the fish hook sharpener) and run it through the blade-sharpening machine. Down the ceramic on alternating strokes at the same angle you used to sharpen it until the edge is as sharp as you think it can be. br>A cheap strop to put a shaving edge on your blade is a piece of cardboard rubbed in regular metal polish and dried. The cardboard contains a lot of silicate from the manufacturing process, and when you polish it, it acts like a 3000 grit strop, polishing your cutting edge finely. The finer the polish is, the closer it resembles a razor. br>I hope that this information is useful.

What grit numbers do each sharpening and honing service have?

The diamond plate on the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener has a coarse grit of 220-grit. The coarse diamond plate is 600 grit, while the fine diamond plate is 600 grit. grit. The grit of the ceramic honing rod is not measured in the same way as the diamond plates, but it is estimated to be between 1000 and 2000 grit by our engineers. The ridges, which reduce surface area to increase surface pressure and act as a coarser surface, are the only difference between the coarse and fine sections of the ceramic rod.

On this, how difficult would sharpening a 7-inch blade be? I was planning on purchasing a Sypderco Sharpmaker, but after seeing this, I'm reconsidering my decision. ?

I saw my buddy sharpen a fillet knife with it using sweeping angles and it worked fine, but we had to sharpen it "tons" of times when processing my deer. I believe the knife was a 7" blade.

Other than the ones that come with the tool, are there any other plates available? I have the wsgss, which comes with an accessory kit containing additional plates. ?

This model sharpener does not come with any additional diamond plates. A Coarse Diamond Plate of 220 grit and a Fine Diamond Plate of 600 grit are used in the WS Guided Field Sharpener. The ceramic rods can be used to create a finer blade edge, which can then be honed with the leather strop that comes with the kit.

Good all- It's a useful tool that's well worth the money, but it's not without flaws
3/5

It's a good product, but it's not outstanding. Internal broadhead wrenches (located behind the sharpening plates) are one of the unit's many clever features. I like how small it is and how sturdy it is. The rotating ceramic hone, in my opinion, is the best feature and does an excellent job of honing an edge. By the way, you can remove the ceramic hone by removing the retaining pin located just in front of the turning handle. Powerful magnets hold the diamond sharpening plates in place, and they can be removed and replaced as needed. These plates do not appeal to me. The coarse one would only be used to repair a badly damaged edge, and the fine one is still a little too coarse for my tastes; Sharpening stones, on the other hand, produce a much more even edge, which I prefer. The addition of the leather strop is a nice touch. I quickly restored a shaving sharp edge to my EnZO 95 trapper by using the ceramic hone and strop. In the end, it's a useful tool for keeping your knife sharp while driving. It's light enough for a camping trip or to sharpen your broadheads on a hunting trip, but it's too heavy for a backcountry canoe trip or backpacking trip. I will, however, remove the ceramic hone and take it into the backcountry with me because it is excellent and has grooves for sharpening fishing hooks. Sharpening stones, on the other hand, are what I'll use to keep a razor-sharp edge.

For a razor-sharp edge, apply the same number of strokes to both sides of the blade
5/5

This is a fantastic knife sharpening tool. This is the sharpener I use the most out of a variety of brands. In a matter of minutes, a dull blade can be transformed into a razor-sharp blade. This is without a doubt the best sharpener I've ever used or owned. It comes with a coarse and fine side, as well as a diamond honing rod with coarse and fine sides and a leather strop. A groove on the rod can be used to sharpen fishhooks, and a "wrench" built into one of the panels can be used to remove broadheads. It's small enough to fit into a backpack or glove box and keep you sharp in the field.

I adore this knife sharpening system and find it to be extremely useful at work
5/5

I've spent about 62 of my 72 years trying to figure out how to sharpen my kitchen and field knives in a consistent manner. First, I had to accept that my eyesight was inadequate for guiding a beveled blade over a stone or whatever. A few years ago, I fixed this on Amazon. After that, I had to look into Work Sharp's offerings. I already own a Ken Onion Edition electric band sharpener, which was a huge improvement thanks to the graded belts and dependable angle guide, but I recently purchased this item for two reasons: In the field, there is no electricity. Moreover, the electric grinder system quickly removes a large amount of metal. I was looking for a way to 'touch up' my look. This was just what I needed to sharpen a six-inch razor blade. quality of the piece four chefs knives of various sizes, as well as a steel steak knife set. For straight-haired people, this hand-sized system was ideal. my 10-inch paring knife with a serrated edge and my paring knife with a serrated edge bread slicer, serrated, inch In addition, I'm a high-achieving individual. Despite having high-end steels and diamond steel hones, I still found this purchase useful because of the grit range and the small but serviceable leather stropping surface.

I am blown away! This sharpener has a lot to offer for the money, in my opinion
5/5

This is an excellent first step for people who are new to sharpening and want to learn to sharpen on stones rather than using guided sharpeners. Sharpeners in the stick style, or even the dreadful pull-style sharpeners through the use of sharpeners in the style of br>br>This sharpener is well-designed, and it includes almost everything a user would need in a sharpening setup to take a knife from dead blunt to hair-shaving sharp! They also built this sharpener with built-in 20-degree angle guides to assist those who are new to sharpening in maintaining their angle and getting better results. Even the strop has built-in 25-degree angle guides to help the user remove the burr once it's done. The fact that they also include a fine ceramic rod for serrations and fishing hook grooves for sharpening hooks and other pointed tools only adds to the versatility. If that wasn't enough, they also incorporated some broad head arrow wrenches into the sharpener for field hunters. When they came up with this concept, the people at work sharp were clearly thinking. So there's a big thumbs up! br>br>Here's what you get with this sharpener: br>1) Extra Coarse grit diamond stone for very dull or damaged knivesbr>2) Fine grit diamond stone for general sharpening and maintenancebr>3) Ceramic rod for finish sharpening and honingbr>4) Leather strop for burr removal and achieving a shaving sharp edgebr>5) Thin ceramic rod for serrations and fine sharpening needsbr>6) Fish hook groves for pointed tools and hooksbr>7) Broad head br>br>Using any lubricant with this sharpening system is not recommended because you don't want to get the leather strop wet. Although it is recommended that a drop or two of oil be added to the leather strop every now and then to keep it from drying out. br>This sharpening system was created to be used in a dry environment. Simply rub the rod and stones with a polymer/rubber pencil eraser to remove all of the built up steel particles from the stones and ceramic rod once your sharpening rod and diamond stones begin to load and stop cutting efficiently. After a while, you might want to add a little more chromium oxide rouge to the leather strop. However, plain leather will suffice if this is not desired. br>br>Conclusion: br>br> br>br>This is something I would strongly recommend to others. The fact that every sharpening implement on this device is replaceable was one of my favorite features of this sharpener. So, if one of the stones wears out, you can simply replace it; There's no need to invest in a brand-new sharpener. Great design with a lot of thought put into it! This book comes highly recommended.
