As you might have guessed, this is essentially a low-cost downrigger. The amount of line you let out to reach your desired depth (based on 20lb test monofilament) is calculated using the chart provided on the package. We used them to troll for spoonbills, and they were somewhat successful. I hope this information is useful, and I wish you luck and good fishing.
It's best if you wear the ring. To get the best results, you must also match the lure weight! in the same way that this 20-year-old driver 30 feet. In deeper water, a larger size is recommended.
If you keep them clean in between uses, they will last a long time. Between trips, give them a good rinse and a good dry. They won't last as long as fresh ones, but I'd go ahead and do it anyway. Before they rust out, you'll most likely tear them off on the bottom or structure.
You don't need to go very fast; depending on the size of the diver, the further away from the boat you are, the deeper it dives.

Funny story, I had this and a shaking rainbow, flasher, all kinds of weights, and $19 in gear, and I messed up the first knot, and everything just fell into the lake. I didn't fish with this for a second, and it was all my fault.
It's ridiculous how many Striper this product has caught! I'm a striper guide in Tennessee, and I put this thing to the test. We catch just as many, if not more, stripers on this than we do on the planner board. We'll be lifelong customers.
To ensure that your colors are accurate, read the product color code and consult the Luhr Jensen website. It's possible that what you see in the picture isn't what you'll get. I requested a chrome bottom with a chartreuse bottom, but instead received a chartreuse bottom with a white bottom.
These are pretty good; the only thing I'd change is that the release should have a better option than the nut and screw. Aside from that, they're fine.
It takes a while to figure out how to use these properly, but once you do, they're fantastic.
One of the release pins is completely missing, rendering it useless.
