Questions & Answers
Simply match the rod's weight to the reel's weight. All of these brands are good: SAGE, ORVIS, TAYLOR, REDDINGTON, ECHO, LAMSON. I'll spend the same amount on the reel as I did on the rod if I spend $200 on it.
That is an excellent query. This is something that needs to be updated. It's a rod with a moderate amount of action. Caster that is very simple. Thank you very much!
5”. Rod is well-made and performs above expectations.

I got my 6wt rod a few days ago and was planning on setting it up for bass fishing. The Bankshot HD line in WF6F from Orvis was the perfect match for the rod. I put on a big deer hair frog and went out into the backyard to see how it worked. I'm no expert castmaster, but I was blown away by how easily and far I was able to cast this setup; I was easily shooting out 85-foot casts. I was able to feel the rod load better than with just about any other rod I have, and while it wasn't quite up to par with my Helios 3D or Sage One, it was pretty darn close, and at its price point, this rod is an incredible value!.
I've been in contact with Tate, and not only am I happy with the product, but they've gone above and beyond in answering my questions and alleviating some of my concerns. Unbelievable company, and I strongly advise you to do business with them. Also, take a look at their Midnight Special rods. WOW. For years to come, I'll do business with these guys and sing their praises. Look no further than the guys at Moonshine if you want to learn about customer service.
4 times the amount of money I ordered a 3 wt and was so pleased with it that I ordered an 8 wt from Moonshine. I haven't fished the 8 yet, but the 3 caught 17 panfish in about an hour, tosses well, loads well, and has excellent balance. It was perfectly balanced when I fished it with an old Orvis CFO reel that I'd had for nearly 40 years. As soon as I get some line on it, I'll pair it with a Piscifun Platte large arbor reel that I recently purchased. This is a mid-priced reel that has received positive feedback, so when all is said and done, I'll be looking for a good performing rig.
I just got back from an Alaskan trip. My friends used an orvis and a Winston, so I threw them both. Moonshine was clearly superior in terms of taste. But the real kicker was that both of our guides who threw the rod were blown away by it before even knowing the price, and they've since emailed me to ask for the rod's name. We used an 8-weight to catch Silvers. The rod is one of my favorites. I also have a Sage, and to be honest, it throws like a broomstick in comparison. I've had a lot of fun with it over the years, but I bought this as a backup in case it breaks. After two days (one with a sink tip and the other with a floating tip), I switched reels to see if the line was simply better or if it was indeed shooting through the eyes as I suspected. It wasn't the line; I'll tell you what, I've hunted and fished all over the world, and this is the best deal I've ever found. It will become well-known in Orvis or Sage circles once it has gained a foothold. No, I am not employed by them. I'm a medical professional. This is a dog-free zone. That's how good it is. Today I'm going to buy a 5 pound weight. It's almost as if you're stealing when you buy and run. When Alaskan guides ask for your name a week after your trip, you know it wasn't just your casting preferences at work. Those guys threw it a long distance!.
You won't find a better rod after a summer of fishing in West Yellowstone and using the rod from rivers to lakes for the money. I'm very pleased with it and anticipate using it for many years. This rod works well with both dry and streamer flies because it has two tips. I recently received a new Moonshine 5wt 10' rod. It appears that the fit and finish are excellent. After putting the rod together and making a few false casts, it appeared to have a medium action rather than a fast action. There are two tips included, one of which appears to be a little stiffer than the other. It's a good way to mix things up. I haven't fished with it yet and won't be able to until May 2019, at which point I will provide an updated review on the rod's casting feel and performance. When the new reel arrives, I'll load it with 5wf orvis line and test it out before going out on the water to get a feel for the action. So far, I'm happy with it. I only gave it four stars because I haven't cast or caught any fish yet to see how well it works.
For the money, this is one of the best rods available. I got the 10 foot 7 weight to fish steelhead and trout with heavy streamers. The two tip sections differ slightly in stiffness, with one having a faster action and the other having a medium fast action. I'm not sure if this was done on purpose or by accident, but it works out great because I can switch out the tips depending on the type of fishing or the weight of the fly. The rod casts beautifully and can keep up with some of the more expensive rods when it comes to shooting line. The cork has a high density. The reel seat is of excellent quality, and the rod balances well with a 7/8" large arbor reel. There is enough backbone sudden onset sensitivity at the tip section to detect light strikes when fighting larger fish. Overall, I would recommend this rod to anyone who is a beginner or a season angler, such as myself.
