Questions & Answers

I'm curious about the stem's diameter. I'm trying to figure out if it'll fit in the hole in my tying bench. ?

The main stem shaft measures 3/8 inch in diameter.

Is there a groove in the jaw that accommodates various hook gauges?

There are no grooves on the faces, so it is smooth. It does, however, hold hooks exceptionally well, and it is an excellent beginner vice because it is well-built and performs flawlessly.

Is there a pedestal base included with this item?

No, this item is meant to be secured to a table.

I'm looking for a good fit for my son's Christmas stocking. Is there a way to find out the product's packaging dimensions?

I don't recall the packaging size, but the vice is in a 12'4'1 box. 75". That should be enough to fill a large Christmas stocking:

With a $5 upgrade, you can have a nice vice
5/5

It securely holds anything from a 28 midge hook to a 4/0 saltwater hook, and the rotary function is smooth. I added a thumb screw, as shown in the attached image, to avoid having to use a tool to set up the full rotary (the threads are 10x25 if you want to do the same), as well as a materials clip. This vice will not hold you back, whether you're tying meat for warm-water and saltwater species, needing the tiniest of midges to entice a picky rainbow in some skinny backwater, or anything in between. between.

Because of the plastic parts, it's extremely inconvenient
3/5

I prefer to buy American whenever possible, but I'm disappointed in the use of plastic parts in the most critical areas of this vice, as well as how other reviews claim it's all metal when it isn't, which is very misleading. The nuts that hold the rotation bar in place, as well as the one that tightens the vice, are made of cheap plastic and easily loosen. Rotating the bar is pointless because it never holds a firm grip on the plastic and instead spins freely. When you have to rotate the actual vice to change positions because the turn bar is useless, the plastic nut on the inside loosens up with it, and the whole thing starts swinging like a pendulum. It completely defeats the purpose of the rotating feature, and it's extremely inconvenient. This is what happens when you save a penny on a high-quality part that would normally cost ten cents, and the entire system suffers as a result. I might go to Home Depot to see if I can find better metal bolts, but that shouldn't be necessary to get a product to work properly. On the plus side, the vice itself is something I enjoy. Going with the double twist screws over the locking arm seemed risky at first, but it turns out to be rock solid once you get used to it. Clamp works great on an Ikea desk; I just used some thin cardboard to protect the desk from scratches, and I like the bobbin holder option. Simply put, stop scrimping on the essentials.

This Vise is fantastic! I work as a fly tier on a shoestring budget
5/5

As a result, I was unable to justify the $150-plus expenditure. There are over 200 fly tying vises on the market, but I wanted a rotary vise so I could tie larger streamers. I've been tying flies for the past 15 years with a $20 clamp vise. I've tied some nice flies with it, but they're not very efficient. For me, this vise is a huge improvement! After reading many of the reviews on this vise, I decided to go with the Griffin without the cam, and I'm glad I did because this vise grips a wide range of hook sizes and does so securely! I didn't think the camera was necessary because it only takes 2 seconds. It takes longer to catch a fish this way. The plastic knobs that come with the vise have been criticized by some, but I don't see how this is a problem. I've had great success with the vise. I've tied a lot of Zoo Cougars, Heifers, and Boogie Man flies since I got this vise! It's quite effective! If you're looking for a low-cost rotary vise, this is a good option; however, I'd suggest watching a YouTube video of someone using this exact vise to see if it'll work for you. For tying flies, it's a low-cost, simple-to-use, and effective vise!.

Great job, Vise! This is a fantastic vise
5/5

It's designed to hold a small metal hook while thread and feathers are wrapped around it. That is exactly what it does. The hook is held in place by two screws that must be tightened. It's not difficult; just read the small instruction booklet that comes with the vise. I've tied dozens of flies and have never had a problem with the pieces loosening or breaking. I like that I can rotate the fly, and the spool holder is a nice touch. When compared to a $400 vise, it's clear that this one is flimsier, but I can't imagine tying a fly without a cast-iron 300-pound vise. If I were going to do this for a living, I'd invest in a more powerful setup. This vise is ideal for tying flies for fun and relaxation, as well as catching a few fish. If you want a vise that rotates 360 degrees and has a bobbin holder, this is the one to get.

I'm glad I bought it at the last possible moment
5/5

First and foremost, let me state that I only recently received this vice. Having said that, this was money well spent. br>br>I'm a newbie to fly tying. I tied my first one a few years ago and then put it aside due to time constraints. br>br>I picked it up again early this year and was completely absorbed in it. br>br>Originally, I purchased an Umpqua starter kit with the $15 lever action vice, and while it was adequate, it lacked a lot of features. br>br>As I got more into it over the last year, I watched more and more videos, and the value of a rotary vice kept jumping out at me, but the costs kept me from upgrading. br>br>Finally, I found this vice, and I'm amazed at how much I like it. I tied about a dozen flies on it today, and I'm amazed at how much I like it. br>br>It appears to be well-made and functions as expected (at least so far). If you're new to tying and need a vice, this is the one to get. In comparison to starter kit models, the vice is a breeze once you know what you're doing. br>br>Hooks are simple to set in the vice and hold firmly in place; rotation is smooth; the vertical stem adjusts smoothly and easily and won't budge when tightened; and the c clamp looks like it could be run over by a truck and still do its job. br>br>If you're new to the game, Intermediate: If you're sure you want to expand your capabilities and skills but aren't sure whether or not to spend the money, go ahead and do it. You will not be let down. br>br>.
