Questions & Answers
You can use it, but it's too light and the treaded barbs will get stuck in the fish.
The heaviest fish so far was a 50lb king, which my buddy was able to swing into his Outback despite the fact that I wouldn't recommend pulling a heavy fish by just the gaff. If the fish is particularly large, spear it and bring it close to the kayak, grabbing the tail to lift it in.
The spear end's OD is 5/16", so a 1/4" threaded rod should suffice. The spear's overall length is 11 1/2".

is for when a decision needs to be made quickly. This is a threaded rod with an angled top inserted into a large dowel that has been lightly reinforced. At a hardware store, you could make one of these. It has a foam grip, but the wood is relatively unprotected elsewhere with a coat of poly, and saltwater sheathing is required. It's mostly fine, but it appears to be a little frail for its intended long-term use. I applied epoxy to the end grain of the wood before wrapping it in athletic tape.
Anthony has speared a number of large fish with great success. This book comes highly recommended.
I caught 20 pound kahala, shibi, and uku on the floats.
It's amazing how it hasn't developed a rust spot despite being subjected to so much abuse. To tie it off, I added a prayer cord wrap to the handle, which worked perfectly.
Great size and performance, but the spear part bends when used on fish larger than 10 pounds.
Very nice seller and a good, strong product. I would strongly suggest it. BUY THE OTHER CHINESE JUNK IF YOU WANT TO SAVE MONEY. SUPPORT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND PRODUCTS MADE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! LOVE IT ;.
