Questions & Answers

This dolefin will fit what size outboard motors?

I know it will fit my 2017 Yamaha 6 HP short shaft 4-stroke motorcycle. I no longer have the bow rise and can plane with less throttle now that I've gone outboard. The two forward bolts are a little too close together, but there's plenty of room.

Is the Davis Fin compatible with a Merc 150?

I've made use of the Doel- Fining on a Mercury 150hp, Yamaha 200, and Suzuki 200 was a success. If you don't understand the physics behind what it's doing, it only appears to be small. It's an amazing device, similar to an airplane wing. A vertical force vector is created by an aircraft's forward momentum, which allows it to fly. The Americas Cup sailboats now have hydrofoils, which is the same concept. Fuel consumption has been increased. efficiency, and a quicker hole-in-one Steering is more responsive after a shot.

Will it smooth out the ride on a 10 foot inflatable (rib) with a 10 horsepower outboard?

It will, in fact.

Will it smooth out the ride on a 10 foot inflatable (rib) with a 10 horsepower outboard?

Yes, it should make the ride more even.

In rough or following seas, this is an excellent fix for boats that are slow to plane and to prevent cavitation
4/5

The mounting holes are recessed, which is nice, and the hardware is stainless with lock nuts, which is good, but I would have preferred a bolt that would lock into the fin so the locknuts could be tightened much more easily than the phillips head cap bolts provided. When torqueing down the nuts, be careful not to strip the supplied bolts, and make sure you mount it directly over the propeller, not at the back of the cavitation plate, as many people do because it just looks right. It needs to be above, not behind, the propeller. To see how it should look on a Mercury 90 four stroke, look at the photos.

More stability and control over the boat
4/5

I have a 16 on the scale. The Crestliner is a five-foot boat powered by a Mercury four-stroke engine that produces 60 horsepower. I had no trouble getting on plane, unlike most boaters who purchase a Hydrofoil for their boat. Holding the bow down in rough water was a challenge for me. Even with the motor trimmed all the way down, the boat would launch into the air on a wave once the chop reached more than a foot. With the bow down and the fin on, the chop can be parted. It also provides a more stable feeling to the boat. On the downside, trimming is now a little more difficult. I'm still learning, but it appears that my top speed has decreased slightly, and the faster I go, the less I can trim. This, I believe, is due to the foil's lift. At a cruising speed of 25 miles per hour, I appear to have lost about half a mile per gallon, but when it gets a little rough, my fuel economy improves because my boat doesn't launch into the air on every wave, so instead of plodding along at 15 miles per hour, I can do 20 to 25 miles per hour. 22MPH. The ride isn't any drier, but it is a lot more comfortable. br>The bottom line is that it stays on the boat because most of my fishing is done in Puget Sound, where wind forecasting appears to be difficult. br>UPDATE 3 MAY 2020br>After almost two years with this on my outboard, I've come to the conclusion that any loss in top speed is less than 1/2 mile per hour. On a calm lake, the loss of fuel economy is minimal.

Overall, there has been significant progress
5/5

It took about an hour to complete the installation. I took my time measuring everything and double-checking my work. The next day, I went to the lake with it. My boat is a 2016 Tracker TF with a Mercury 4 stroke engine that produces 60 horsepower. What a distinction. Now that the boat is on the plane, it is moving much more quickly. I can actually increase rpms to increase speed, which I couldn't do before because the boat would porpoise before I could use it to its full potential. It now planes quickly, trims out easily, and allows the motor rpm to be increased, resulting in a 2-fold increase in fuel efficiency. Increased speed by three miles per hour. This is a low-cost performance boost that has a significant impact. This, or any other hydrofoil device, is highly recommended.

OMG, you've outdone yourself
5/5

I recently purchased a new 30 hp Mercury and was concerned that I had undersized the engine because it was taking all of the power to get the 13' Boston Whaler to take to the air. I went out and bought a Doel. It's worth a shot just to see if it's possible. OMG. That's right, it's truly incredible. There was no plowing, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no The boat boarded a plane and flew away. I couldn't believe it when I saw the same number of people, same water conditions, and so on. I tried it several times and got the same results each time. Simply incredible. Now, with the Doel-Knapp-Knapp-Knapp-K I have fine control over the bow and boat speed because I can feather the bow for optimal hull to water contact, resulting in faster speeds. There aren't enough words to express how much I appreciate everything you've done for These outcomes were unexpected.

They were successful in their endeavor
5/5

I picked up a secondhand Gheenoe and added a 2. The motor has a horsepower of 5 hp. It was simply not up to the task, so I purchased a Nissan with 5 horsepower. The same thing happened this time; the plane wouldn't take off. I was about to abandon the project when it occurred to me that I had previously used Doal Fins on other boats. I purchased a set for my Nissan 5hp. They were a little big, so I had to trim them down a bit to get them to fit properly. The fins and Nissan, on the other hand, brought that boat to life. It went from slogging along at 11 miles per hour to rising onto plane and topping out at just over 22 miles per hour. It's a huge distinction. This was done with a 200-pound man, a half-tank of gas, and some paddles and other accessories. These fins are unbeatable in the right situation.

Is it possible to install in 15 minutes? This was purchased for my aluminum bass boat, which is 16 feet long
3/5

The boat would take a long time to get on plane with a 40 hp motor because of all the weight in the back (3 huge batteries, fuel tank, wife, etc. ). I needed to get on the plane faster and stay on the plane for a longer period of time at a lower speed. The Doel- Fin appeared to be a low-cost accessory that could help me with my problem. br>br>Installation: br>br>Installation: br>br>Installation: The Doel-branded instructions are included with the Doel-branded Doel-branded Doel-branded Do Fins are almost impossible to come across. existent. This is due to the fact that these are claimed to fit all "newer" 5 hp engines. above the outboard motors That's a lot of outboards with a lot of different characteristics! Perhaps some of them can be set up in 15 minutes. One of them certainly wasn't my 40-horsepower Merc; From beginning to end, it took 3 1/2 hours. The first issue was locating the "fins" in such a way that drilling the mounting holes would be possible. The issue was that the outboard's shape made it impossible to shoot straight at the holes. Something always interfered with the drill motor, whether it was from above or below (tried both conventional and close-range drills). quarter drill at a 90 degree angle). I was finally able to drill the mounting holes after moving the fins backwards about an inch and shifting the forward holes outward with an extra long drill bit. The fins got in the way of mounting the trim tab, which was the next issue. To get around this, I had to mark and trim away a section of the fins' underside. I can attest to the fact that they are made of durable materials. Regardless, I was able to obtain the Doel- Mounted on the fin So, how did it turn out? br>br> It did, however, improve my ability to board a plane significantly. The best estimate is a 40% shortening of the time to board the plane. Furthermore, the boat will plane at a much slower rate. The disadvantage is that top speed has been reduced by about 3 mph. On a long run, this is significant because my "before" speed was only 30mph. But that's not a problem for me. Furthermore (and likely contributing to the speed issue), the power trim is extremely difficult to adjust; the motor can only be trimmed up a small amount before the prop starts to ventilate. Because finding the sweet spot for optimal speed is extremely difficult, I'm going to leave the Doel- My boat has a fin. If I can't find a solution to the trim issues, I'll probably remove the fins. I'd appreciate it if anyone could offer some advice on the trim issue.
