Questions & Answers

Is there a variety of sizes to choose from?

The cannon Cast Aid is only available in one size.

Can I use one on my spoon bill snaggingpole, which normally only lasts a couple of hours before my finger becomes severely bruised?

I've never had a spoon bill snagging pole, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. It's a fishing rod with a reel and line, and if your finger hurts after casting for a long time, this Cannon casting aid will help. Your finger is not under any pressure. You're ready to go after a couple of turns on the assist. If you're loading your rod for a good cast, I highly recommend it.

Is this a spinning reel or a baitcaster reel?

If you're casting braided line, a spinning reel is a must; it'll prevent you from cutting your finger. It's what I use for my long-casting surf rod.

Installation of the Cast Aid has a few flaws and concerns
3/5

I don't like how little information there is in the ads for this product about how to attach the unit to a rod. Rods made from down-to-earth materials Some rod/reel combinations can't have the product taped onto the fore grip because the forward spool edge of the reel doesn't extend over the front grip where the instructions call for mounting the product, and the product gets in the way of some reel bails when installed per directions, preventing a comfortable grip on the reel. br>br>However, with a little practice, the product improves the distance a given weight can be cast, and with more practice, even greater distances should be possible. With a two-year contract, The product also helps prevent line cuts in fingers by braided line. br>br>The manufacturer includes a warning that the product can impart a higher strain on line than a finger hold and could result in weights breaking off during the cast; it suggests using a heavy shock shot to prevent breaking off weights. With the product in use, the rod loads much more, so pay attention to the warnings and suggestions.

This item did not appeal to me
3/5

This item did not appeal to me. I watched a few YouTube videos to learn how to mount and use the device. I'm fishing with 40lb braid and a 4oz sinker on my surf rig. I couldn't seem to get the Breakaway to hold the line, so I wrapped it around 2-and-a-half times. It slipped through three times before letting go, just as the videos showed. To get it to hold, I had to wrap it six times, but that cut down on my casting distance significantly. To avoid getting cut, I took it off and covered my finger with a piece of tape. I'm considering giving it another shot with a different rig and line.

Amazing
4/5

This is something I'm completely enamored with. I use 50 braid and previously protected my fingers with duct tape. While this method worked, it resulted in a sliced-up mess that kept me safe. br>br>I don't have to worry about protecting my fingers anymore! br>br>At this point, I can get to the beach's second break. It's very effective. br>br>Protect your fingers, gain some distance, and get this today!.

I bought one just to try it out, and now I have them on all of my surf poles
5/5

When casting surf-casting, use cord rather than monofilament. These are excellent lures for use at any time of day or night. There's no need to wear a glove to protect your fingers, and they let me respond by throwing something out there. Before it becomes automatic, a little learned muscle memory is required, at least for this clumsy fisherman, but it's a short learning curve, and then you can use them blind in the dark just as easily as during the day. br>br>I've read some complaints about how they have to be taped to the rod, but that's a necessary feature because you want to position the shaft directly below the spool of your reel, and reels vary in size; think of it as a custom job, and you'll feel better about it. Before thinking of heat-resistant tape, I used electrical tape. shrunk sleeves are also available in the same Home Depot department for a low price. This results in a much cleaner-looking final effect and eliminates the risk of the tape end unraveling, but either method will suffice. I'd recommend using tape first to ensure that you're happy with the location before using the shrink sleeve to make it more permanent. It's a fantastic product that, in my opinion, is well worth the money.

This is a great tool for casting
5/5

I've been fishing for a long time, but this was my first time casting a surf rod, so I decided to give the breakaway a shot. Because chucking 5 to 6 ounces felt uncomfortable with my finger, I prefer to use it instead. The BC allows me to cast with ease, and I was able to cast 2 to 3 feet farther, which is an improvement. On my setup, fit was not an issue. I have a 10 ft Penn Pursuit with a Daiwa 4500 BG, but I can see how some combos might have issues; however, it's money well spent for my application, and I'd buy another if I needed to expand my surf combo arsenal.

This device will save your fingers or hand, as well as provide you with additional casting distance
5/5

Version in a nutshell: Buy it; it's a great piece of safety equipment that could save you a trip to the ER by extending your range of motion. It does, however, require some training. br>br>I deduct a star for ease of use because there were no clear instructions on how to properly use this device, and I initially installed it incorrectly, which resulted in poor results. I watched a few YouTube videos and was immediately hooked after reinstalling it in the proper location. (no pun). This simple device could save your finger or hand, as well as a trip to the ER, if you cast 3oz from the shore while surf fishing. There's no need to be concerned about the next cast ripping your finger or hand open once you've gotten the hang of it. You simply release the trigger as you would your line, and you will notice a boost in distance, which you will need to adjust to depending on where you're targeting your cast. br>br>Prior to owning this, the scar on my hand was an actual trip to the ER while surf casting 40pd braid, which cut through my hand like a ban saw almost to bone, requiring sutures. It ultimately ruined a fishing trip I took several years ago. Overall, it's a fantastic product, and I'm surprised that major manufacturers haven't purchased the patent so they can incorporate it into their own rod designs.

There will be a learning curve
3/5

I had no complaints about the item's quality. I gave it a three star rating because I had to learn where to release it during casts, which was higher than normal for me, and it did what it was advertised with no slipping as some other reviews claimed. Two issues arose as a result of it: 1. My casts were removed for a while when I switched to using my finger; muscle memory kicked in after that. I'm sometimes off because it doesn't transfer the feel of the rod loading during casts. This is best suited to someone who primarily casts 4oz and up. 2 oz lures are my go-to bait. In terms of distance, I didn't notice much improvement.
