The top zip is the only way to open it. You won't have any problem with ventilation with this jacket since it is very thin and loose. That's at least what I didn't do. This jacket is fantastic! I really like how light it is and how reflective it is. In addition to keeping you warm in freezing temperatures, this jacket will create body heat for you as soon as you put it on. While the Nike Impossibly Lite Jacket(which I own) has eyelets on the armpits and a perforated logo to allow your body to breathe, this jacket does not.
