I don't believe they make backing plates; however, if you're installing these on a kayak, you won't need one; simply don't overtighten the screws; kayaks are made of fairly thick plastic.

I don't know the quality of this product because I haven't installed it on my kayak yet. Once I do, I'll come back and write a review, but so far the construction appears to be good and it seems like a pretty decent product. It came in a Ziploc bag with no indication of origin, but it's probably made in China, so that's what you get for Amazon.
I put these in my kayak and they're working great. Installing it was a breeze. It's quite effective. If you're using a hole saw, make the cut at the same angle as the rod holders. Drill the screw holes slightly smaller than the screws so that they can bite into the material, saving you the trouble of having to use a dreamer tool or file. For a good water seal, use silicone in the gasket's holes and around the perimeter of the rod holder.
Otherwise, good value for money. First time while the boat was docked in heavy rain. Water was poured into each of the four containers. They had a good cap on them as well. Because I'm using a wooden boat, I'll simply drill a small drain hole in the bottom of each one. However, I don't think anyone would do that if they were in a kayak.
Put these on my sundolphin from back in the day. Anyone should be able to do it. A hole saw bit with a diameter of 2 inches was used. I may replace the screws with rivets in the future, but for now, they appear to be holding. Although it came with a rubber gasket/lid, I still used a small amount of silicone to seal it.
These are great value for money. The only reason I docked a star was because I wished they came with better hardware. I used external nuts and bolts to replace them, and I used marine sealant to seal the gasket. So far, I'm completely confident in these.
Install all 4 on my perception pascador pilot 12, doesn't quite cover the factory crap rod holder perception provided, but it looks and functions better now.
The price is excellent, and the product performs admirably. Remember to drill a hole near the angle of the pole holder if you want it to fit flush. Snap-on rain guards are convenient and keep water out.
Excellent product; just make sure it's on a flat surface before using it.
