Can these holders be used to store snowshoes or downhill skis in the winter as well? What is the distance between the bars (from inside edge to inside edge)?

The inside edge to edge measurement is exactly 3". according to the tape measure

Is it possible to use this in the open air?

I don't think there's any reason why it shouldn't be done. Mine is in a storage room, but it has a black coating on it that should keep it from rusting.

Is it possible to get the mounting screws? If not, what size screws/bolts are needed to secure this item to a stud or post?

For mounting to a Suspenz support post, bolts, nuts, and washers are included; however, I believe you will need to purchase additional hardware if you want to flush wall mount. The mounting holes are almost exactly a quarter inch in diameter.

What's the distance between the wall and this?

About 10 inches in length. There are only enough paddles for four people.

It's strong and simple to put together

I'm being picky, but the ridged rubber things that keep the paddle in place are shoddy. fitting. They must be one continuous piece from beginning to end. It's made of high-quality metal that is extremely durable. In the garage, I screwed straight into a stud. Installing it was a breeze.

What about a model that you can use outside? I've got 5 paddles on it and it's working perfectly. If it were made of aluminum, I would give it five stars because I need it outside; perhaps the manufacturer should consider making an outdoor-rated model? It would also be great if it had a strap or bungie (or at the very least eye hooks / holes) in front to keep paddles in place when it gets windy (again, this is an outdoor setup).
