I'm not sure; I've never tried to find out. In the event that the canoe overturns, my wife and I use lanyards on the oars. They will always be in the canoe, whether they float or not.
According to conventional wisdom, you should place the paddle on the ground while standing upright. The paddle should then be able to be tucked under your armpit. I'm about 5' 9", so I went with a 5' paddle, which is actually a little taller than conventional wisdom suggests because I prefer a longer paddle. But I wasn't satisfied because it wasn't quite as long as I prefer a paddle, which ends up being too close to my nose. So I went out and purchased the 5. Paddle measures 5 feet long. Without having to lean over, it is easier for me to engage the entire paddle blade. That is simply my personal preference, and either the 5 or the 6 would suffice. The number 0 or the number 5 5' ought to suffice. They're both fantastic. Paddles that are tough to break!

This is one of my favorite things - After a year or so of use in Puget Sound (salt water), it still looks brand new. As well as a regular paddle, it's been used to push on rocky bottoms. If it ever breaks, I'll definitely buy it again, though I don't think it will under normal use. I'm used to a "normal" wood paddle, so the handle is a little strange, but it works well in terms of ergonomics. In terms of torque, it appears that the curved offset top handle provides a boost - It most likely doesn't, but it feels good in any case.
This paddle was a lot of fun to use. It took a little getting used to the grip, but it's nice. I ordered the 5'5" and it was a little long for me (I'm 6'2"). The one thing I didn't like about it was that the paddle shaft could fill with water because it is open ended into the paddle, which is secure but not extremely tight to the shaft. As a result, the paddle blade wiggles a little. I'd give it a five-star rating if these two issues were resolved. Again, it is well worth the money; however, it is not worthy of a five-star rating.
A paddle that is dependable, sturdy, and comfortable. On an inner tube, I use it to navigate the Clackamas River. My previous paddles were made of solid wood and had a tendency to split. I used this paddle last Saturday and got a splinter in my hand; I have three of these paddles and this is the first time I've ever gotten a splinter.
On a 55-mile float down the Missouri River, I used the paddle. Overall, I like the length and paddle, but I'm not a fan of the handle because it can only be held in one direction. Switching from left to right on the conoe is a little more difficult as a result.
In our canoe, use this paddle to circle one of our ranch lakes. It performs admirably and has a pleasant ergonomic feel. It replaced a 15-year-old one that had been in the canoe 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new one is a lot nicer, and I think it will last a long time. The number five appeals to me. The length is 5 feet.
These paddles are built to last. When I'm launching, I frequently use them to push off of rocks and the bank. I also adore the handles, which are extremely comfortable. I'm 5'8" and use an Old Town Saranac 146, which sits low on the water's bottom, and these paddles are long enough for me.
For years, we've discussed purchasing new paddles. Our old ones were warped and had lost their varnish. My husband was convinced that we needed to spend a lot of money to get new wood. I finally bought these, and after a few trips down the waterways, I'm sold. The hold is excellent.
I just received my "new" paddle. It had clearly been used and was in poor condition. The logo printing on the handle had worn off, the handle had rust colored markings, and the aluminum shaft had been gouged. It was advertised as being brand new, but it wasn't. The performance will not be affected by cosmetic issues, but the gouged shaft may draw blood.
