No, this pump is capable of handling both sand and water. It is not intended for use with only pure sand.

This pump isn't designed to move sand, so it won't work in your situation. The HS series is designed for dewatering applications that contain sand.

Is there anything I should do to this pump before I use it? Is there any pre-priming required, or is there a shipping plug that needs to be removed?

Simply connect it to the power source and turn it on. Just make sure you don't leave it to dry for an extended period of time.

This pump does exactly what it claims: it pumps all of the cr- p out of my sump, as well as the water. It's well-made, quiet, and doesn't pump water out violently. It's a fluid evacuation that's very deliberate and well-controlled. I'm anticipating the first rain of the season, which will cause problems with my old pump. When that arrives, I'll update my review; I don't think I'll have to worry about my sump pit filling up with sand ever again.
