I am very pleasantly surprised. My first reaction is to be Because it was such a good price, and because it was "good enough" to keep us safe in the water, I bought this cushion. Then, I opened it, and I could tell that it was constructed well with high-quality flotation foam and a bright color that can easily be seen from a distance.
As floatation devices, they were used by the hundreds of thousands when they were legal in Canada and the USA. But they are now legally throwables, and many people have stopped buying them for sitting on and the 'make it cheaper' lines of thinking has changed how they are manufactured. Because of the cheaper foam substitute used instead of real durable foam, you will not have to pay as much. There are 15 sheets of 1/8-inch thick packing foam and a few thick plastic stiffener sheets. If you plan to use this as an emergency throw, it will do just fine, but it will not be comfortable for sitting a month's use, the foam will crumble down from almost two inches thick to less than half an inch thick, and worst of all the sheets will stretch around, curl up, and the cushion will become uncomfortable before it is thrown out. However, there is still a decent selection of quality type IV cushions out there for sale, like the Stearns brand which has a cloth cover on closed cell foam and even commercial quality cushions for fire departments and such, from Jim-D. You only need to buy them once when you buy them from Boy. Spend the extra money and avoid the cheaper quality product. They cost at least $35 to $40 at retail and are available online, so if you plan to use it rather than store it as an emergency throw, don't get the cheaper.
The cushion looks nice, I was searching for a red cushion (my son's favorite color) when I came across this one, note that it has webbed handles that don't show in the photo. Multiple thin layers of closed cell foam make this cushion prone to shifting, as others have also stated. The following edits are in effect as of When I'm not using it, I keep it inside when not in use. I've had it for a few years now, and it's still in perfect condition.
You can use it as a cushion and it floats.
This is a very nice and durable product.
A high quality product. I have been using this as a seat pad and floating device in my kayak for a few months. A great deal for the price.
They are great for the price. If you are a boater, you won't want to be without them.
Having red when you're in the water makes it easier for you to see. On the floor of my Coast Guard facility, I have a red and white throw cushion. I recommend it.
