Questions & Answers
Yes, the Applied Ballistics calculator is "scaled back" in this unit. It doesn't have a range card or a multi-player mode. Access to Litz's custom drag curves or a target. On the Kestrel, this model only has three profiles, compared to the elite's thirty.
These are required for software updates, but they are not required for load data updates. Using a phone or tablet, on the other hand, makes it much easier.
It will communicate with AB and transfer data back and forth between the handheld, tablet, and laptop computers. Additionally, there is a warning. Data from the Kestrel is displayed on a screen attached to your rifle (or artillery piece, if that's your thing). The 5700 can be upgraded to Elite for more features. This is a very strong tool.
If it works with my tablet, it should be fine.

However, if all you want is a tool to help you assess the environment and provide you with accurate ballistic data as quickly as possible, you might be disappointed. My new item arrived without an owner's manual, and the quick start guide contained a lot of acronyms that I didn't see in other ballistic software programs - So much time was spent searching for their proprietary codes. The quick start guide was a bit of a letdown. The logic behind the setup sequence/protocol is sometimes missing, which can be frustrating if you don't already have advanced Kestrel meter experience. Because I'm not technically illiterate, I assumed I could simply grab and go - As I began to use it, I was able to figure it out. I made a mistake. The best way is to sit down with a computer and access to YouTube, then walk through the setup process for your specific needs. I'm confident that the product provides accurate weather readings, but getting a usable ballistic chart in a reasonable amount of time has proven difficult so far. It will, without a doubt, improve with practice. However, expect a learning curve and plenty of practice before putting this in the field and relying on it. The first time I used my iOS ballistic apps, I was able to create a completely new profile and view the results in under 5 minutes. With this unit, that's not going to happen. Just my two cents on the subject.
I've had the Kestrel 5700 for almost two months and have gone on at least six shooting trips with it. It has proven to be a very useful tool in assisting groundhog shots out to a range of 450 yards. While 450 yards may not seem like a long distance, hitting a small target at that distance requires a high level of precision. It would be difficult to measure my group's success after 450 members because it is too large to be more than partially successful. One thing to consider when deciding between this and the Elite is that I'm seeing a 1 MOA difference in some cases when using G1/G7 vs. the custom drag models on the applied ballistics app, so after 2 months, I've decided to upgrade to the Elite to help improve my first round hit count. Starting with the low-end 5700 and then upgrading to the Elite won't cost you any more in the end because the upgrade is only $300, bringing my total out-of-pocket to $699 (the same as a new Elite), so you can always start with this model and see how it works for you before upgrading if your shooting demands it.
The meter is of typical Kestrel quality, which I have found to be excellent. It's a rock-solid machine with excellent control and a great screen. I haven't had the opportunity to use it in the field yet, but I do use the Applied Ballistics phone app, and its trajectory modeling with G7 BCs is excellent. br>br>The problem I have with the product is that the software is clearly broken. The 5700 Elite software can be run on this system. It has some very useful extra features, such as 30 gun-shots instead of three. Additional target sets, cartridge definitions, and a few other displays are available. It also included support for Brian Lintz's ballistics models, which go beyond G7 modeling in terms of functionality. Adding the Lintz models is clearly an elite feature that is worth the extra cost, but I gave the product a 3 because it did not include the additional displays, rifle, or target definitions. I have high expectations for my preferred vendors.
Weather meter and ballistic calculator are both fantastic tools. Even though it isn't elite, it uses applied ballistics; however, custom curves aren't available. This is something I would recommend to anyone who is interested in long-range shooting.
This is the first time I've ever used a tool like this at a shooting range. I expected it to be difficult, but after playing with it for about 15 minutes and looking at the support option in the kestrel app on my phone (iPhone), I discovered it was simple to implement. The Environment settings were straightforward, the distance to my target was straightforward, and the gun profile management was straightforward as well. I'm looking forward to taking the kestrel unit to the range and putting it to the test. I'll write a review after I go to the range with the Kestrel 5700 Ballistics. One important point to remember is to select the appropriate kestrel for the job.
In the box, there was only a quick start guide. There isn't any documentation. It was necessary to download it from the Kestrel website. This is a problem because I had to print it on 8-inch by 11-inch paper. 1/2 x 11 paper, which will be a pain to work with on the stovetop. It makes me wonder if this unit was returned without the manual and I got it. Hmmm.
The menu could be better organized, in my opinion. That gets a three out of five from me. In terms of ballistics, I went with the less expensive 5700 because I already had a primary ballistics option. This is just in case something goes wrong.
The single most valuable and wise investment I've made in terms of expanding my long-term portfolio is shooting kit with a range and precision. It's a must-have for precision shooting, and it comes with Ballistic Link, a one-stop shop. a one-stop shop for high-quality, storable, and repeatable solutions Upgradeable to the next firmware level, but managing additional gun profiles isn't necessary for my purposes right now, though the option is available for a few dollars more.
