Questions & Answers

Is this the 64-bit version of the software?

Yes.

Is it still possible to use this if I upgrade my computer with a new motherboard, or do I have to call them and hope they'll let it work?

I'm sure you've figured it out by now because it's been two years since you asked this question, but for anyone else out there, be cautious about changing components in your system after installing this. You might be able to replace certain parts of your PC without Windows freaking out, but a motherboard will almost certainly raise red flags with the software, leading it to believe you're trying to run it on a different machine because the registration keys are now tied to hardware. So, if you upgrade your main board and CPU after installing this, Windows will probably think it's on a new machine and de=register itself, forcing you to call Microsoft to try to fix the problem. Which isn't impossible, but depending on who you speak with on the other end of the line, they might tell you "good luck" and ask you to give us another $189.

Is this a brand-new Windows 10 installation with the original product key?

Yes, it's available as a Microsoft download. This product comes with a key, which you use to download Windows 10 and activate it using the key you purchased.

Is this something that can be done on a brand new computer?

If you don't get a corrupted USB, then yes, it should work.

a number higher than eight; Installation assistance

Windows 8. 1 is a step forward. br>Advice: Don't try to install from the beginning; that was my instinct and the first thing I tried, but it kept freezing in the 'preparing files' section. br>All you have to do is plug in your USB drive, open it in File Explorer, and run'start up'. 'br>It took me an afternoon to realize that.

Don't squander your time or money on this
3/5

I cannot stress enough how strongly I advise against purchasing this. The registration key is all that's required. I started looking for a solution after I ran into a problem. These USB keys, it turns out, have a history of failing to function. Your best bet is to simply download the iso and use Rufus (a free program for creating UEFI bootable USB sticks) to create your own. Not only do these have a poor track record, but they're also currently $30 more expensive than simply purchasing the registration key. You'll save money and time if you use this method.

It's not a criticism of Windows 10, but of the USB installation media
5/5

This isn't meant to be a scathing assessment of Windows 10. Actually, Windows 7 is my preferred operating system. br>br>This is a review of the installation media, specifically the USB thumb drive, which is a significant improvement over the DVD method of OS installation! The installation went smoothly and was much quicker than installing from a DVD.

It isn't difficult in any way
5/5

It's Windows 10 on a flash drive, and the installation process is as simple as eating cake. Getting it in the right side up is the most difficult part.

I recently went on vacation to see my aging parents, and I received a defective stick, a working key, and dreadful customer service
3/5

Their computer was old and they needed a new one, so one of the days I was there, I offered to save them money by building and setting it up for them. Assembly went smoothly, the BIOS was up and running, and everything was moving along smoothly until I attempted to install Windows. br>br>The USB stick didn't work (immediate blue screen upon file load during boot with 00021a, so the installation wizard never even started), and I was treated by Microsoft to the worst customer service experience I've ever had, with him telling me I was "doing it wrongly" and spamming me with messages like "are we done and I can mark it as complete?" He was clearly more concerned with his resolution time metrics than with actual resolution. I wish I had written down the ticket number. I'll be more cautious next time. br>br>After spending the better part of a day in a broken call queue trying to reach a sensible human who wasn't following an outdated debugging script (the steps the first guy gave started with something I couldn't even do because the stick was bad and wasn't even for Windows 10 or desktops and was incompatible with most modern motherboards, despite informing the chat person multiple times that this was what it was for), I found someone in their call Thank you to whoever it was who did that. You do an excellent job and deserve a raise. br>br>Since then, I've received numerous phone calls and emails from Microsoft inquiring about my satisfaction with their service. No, it wasn't, and every time I try to put this awful experience behind me, they contact me again, asking if my problem was resolved and if I was satisfied with my experience. I completed their surveys and answered their calls, but they will not leave me alone. It was because of this that I decided to write a review. br>br>Windows is fantastic, and the key worked, but do not purchase Windows in this state. Unless you consider yourself to be more fortunate than I, use your own USB stick that you know works and manually install on it.

It's a breeze to set up and use

It's a breeze to set up and use. If you don't have a DVD drive and need to install Windows on a computer, this is the way to go.

Using the USB version of Windows 10 Home to install it
3/5

First and foremost, I have been using computers for nearly 40 years. I am not a technician, but I would classify myself as intermediate. Some people recommend installing Windows 10 from an ISO image using a third-party program. When downloading and installing Windows 10, I recommend avoiding third-party products. There's no compelling reason to do so. I wouldn't do it for safety reasons. br>br>NOTE: if you're looking for a unique way to express yourself, this is the place to be The version of Windows 10 Home that I received from Amazon in AUGUST 2019 is 1809 (November 2018), not the most recent version - The year is 1903 (as of May 2019). You can still use this purchase to upgrade to the most recent version (using the license key included in your package). However, you'll need to download Windows 10 from the Microsoft website (do an Internet search for "Windows 10 install"), either to a thumb drive or to a DVD (consult the Microsoft website for the type of DVD you'll need). You should be able to tell which version you're purchasing from Amazon. br>br>Now I'd like to go over a few things that Microsoft doesn't tell you about - and doesn't want you to know what's going on during the installation. Prior to Windows 10, you installed using what Microsoft now refers to as a "Local Account. " They now want you to use the default installation, which requires you to create a "Microsoft Account. " They claim that this is the best way to run Windows. Possibly, but not always. I tend to agree with privacy advocates who argue that using a Local Account is the better option and that Windows 10 is far too intrusive. To determine which option is best for you, conduct an online search using DuckDuckGo. br>br>If you want to use a "Local Account," you should really think about it before installing. The reason for this is that Microsoft has been aware of a bug for more than three years and has yet to address it. This happens if you install a Microsoft Account using the default settings (using your Microsoft email address) and then switch to a Local Account AFTERwards. This may be too advanced for some, but it will truncate your user name in the Windows 10 system at that point. So, if your email address is Samuel@outlook. com. com, the first five characters of your name will be changed to samue INSIDE of Windows. This can be found in the c: directory. \Users. If you use Word or Excel after that, I believe the documents will be associated with "sameu" rather than "Samuel. " You can learn more by conducting an Internet search. Other than a complete reinstall, there is no way to fix it. (Ok, there's another if you're a real nerd. ) Simply disconnect your wired desktop computer during the initial install to set up as a Local Account. Remove the Ethernet cable from the computer and unplug it. (If you're using a laptop, your wireless router may require you to turn it off. ) When you install Windows, it detects that you are offline and allows you to create a Local Account. In order to set up a Local Account, you'll need to create a password and three security questions (all of which are fairly straightforward). This, in my opinion, will result in a smooth and tidy traditional installation. Previously, you didn't have to go through all of this to create a Local Account with Windows 10, as both options were available during the installation. br>br>After you've installed Windows, I recommend going to Settings. Change the 25 privacy settings (yes, there are 25, eight of which you can change during the installation process - which you should double-check during installation, especially the Advertising ID). Then go to Windows Update and get the software updated. Then, if you want, install third-party security software. br>br>If you don't care about privacy and just want everything set up for Cloud use, the default install is probably the best option. (This does not rule out the possibility of using online backup storage with a Local Account. ) br>br>(I had some issues installing Windows 10 Home USB from Amazon, but they could have been caused by the older (5 years or more) Dell hardware I was using (possibly BIOS related). I say this because I had the same problem with the ISO version burned to a DVD. If you have an older Dell (or other) PC that reboots to the first screen after the Windows install and says "Windows needs to restart to continue "rebooting in 10 seconds," eject your DVD and reboot by clicking the Red X in the upper right hand corner of your screen. The "rebooting in 10 seconds" should happen after it boots from the Windows you just installed on your hard drive. "Copying Windows Files" is a term used to describe the process of copying files in Windows Getting the Files in Order Adding features to the system Updates are being installed. Finally, Windows 10 configured as a Local Account is a "good" operating system. There are some bugs that must be fixed - like adding more users to a computer without having to create a Microsoft Account. Windows 98, Windows XP, and Windows 7 were all better operating systems in my opinion. With Windows 7, I use "were" because Microsoft decided not to release an SP2 update like they did with XP. This has reduced the usability and security of an otherwise excellent operating system. Windows 10 with a Microsoft Account, in my opinion, is intrusive and should be rated "poor. " br>br>Best of luck to you.

You have to pay for the luxury
5/5

It is very simple to set up. I needed a dedicated Windows stick, and this fit the bill perfectly. It booted right up onto my Samsung SSD with the help of an Asus Z370 Prime motherboard.
