Family Tree Maker for Mac is not for the faint of heart, but it does a lot of things that make it worthwhile to use as a supplement to Ancestry

com. dot- com, but don't expect to learn how to use this product intuitively or through the manual. Also, don't hold your breath for the Help drop-down menu to appear. The Help is a joke so badly put together that it almost seems sadistic - down menu to get you anywhere fast The most obvious flaw is the lack of consistency between what you see on your screen (names for menu options, etc. ) and what is described in Help. br>br>The program is also riddled with bugs, many of which have been documented elsewhere online. My current least favorite bug collection involves the custom layout feature available when creating charts. Yes, you can alter the chart layout in any way you see fit. However, you soon discover that if you make *any* other change (such as changing your mind about the font used for the chart title), the entire chart format reverts to the state it was in prior to the hour spent on formatting. What type of software operates in this manner? I've never seen anything quite like it. So I redone everything and thought I'd outsmart the system by SAVING the chart; the problem is, the chart saved fine, but when I go to retrieve it, it's not the same chart I saved just minutes before. It's a different chart type, with a different person, and it hasn't been altered in any way. br>br>This issue was discovered in the program's Chart section - I'm not talking about the Book section, where I'd like to use the chart - because chart creation in the Book section was behaving in an inconsistant manner A menu option allows you to import a saved Chart into a Book. It appears to be ineffective. Even in the Chart area, retrieving this previously created chart does not work. So, please explain why I was permitted to save a chart that did not save the data I was working on. So there goes a few hours of my life. br>br>I should probably mention that from 1981 to 1999, I worked for two major computer corporations, the majority of which was spent in product development - both in terms of software and hardware My point in saying this is to let you know that (a) this isn't a computer user illiteracy issue, and (b) I have reason to be shocked by the unreadiness and instability of this ostensibly commercial product. br>br>At this point, I'll continue to use it on the basis of "do not trust the saving of charts" - However, caveat emptor applies. This product will cost you a lot of time, patience, and the ability to reconstruct data losses as you go. br>br>Do not use it unless you have a ton of time, patience, and the ability to reconstruct data losses as you go.

I bought Family Tree Maker for Mac 2010 from Amazon
5/5

I tried the Family Tree Maker for Mac after trying a few genealogy programs with varying levels of features. The main reason I decided to try this software was because it was advertised as having complete Ancestry integration. com. If a person has a family history. The ease of integration between the software and the online Ancestery was praised by com subscription genealogy software reviewers. Those reviewers grossly underestimated the product's capabilities; Family Tree Maker is the most intuitive and user-friendly genealogy software I've ever used. Any changes I make to my Ancestry family tree online can be exported and imported into my Mac's Family Tree Maker program. Alternatively, I can work on my tree on my Mac before uploading and integrating it with my online family tree. However, as useful as that feature is, in my opinion, it isn't the best. The feature that sets this software apart from the rest (actually, it's an Ancestry. com feature). The "hints" feature found in both Ancestry and Family Tree Maker is a com feature that has been integrated into the Family Tree software. Ancestry. When it finds what it believes to be a relationship, it attaches a green leaf icon to the ancestor it believes is related. com takes the family tree information you've provided online and starts a never-ending search of other online family trees that might have related names or information, census records, births, deaths, marriages, military records, and so on. Whether you're using the Family Tree Maker software on your computer or viewing your Ancestry. com family tree. Green leaves appear when you type in com. When you click on the green leaf "hint," you'll be taken to the source of the information, where you can double-check it. This feature alone saved me countless hours of work and led to the discovery of ancestors I had not previously discovered in my own research. I've tried a lot of genealogy software, and this is by far the best. And, while the software has a lot of advanced features that I'm slowly learning, the user-friendly interface is one of the best things about it. The application's user-friendliness facilitates the process. I paid a few dollars more for Family Tree Maker on Amazon than I could have paid elsewhere because Amazon included a six-month subscription to Ancestry. com. com, which resulted in significant cost savings over the course of a six-month Ancestory subscription.

Software that is good
5/5

On my PC, I've been using Family Tree Maker for a long time. I remember when you could get up to 20 CDs in the software box, all of which contained useless information. I was hesitant to purchase this software for my Mac because I had years of Family Tree on my PC and wasn't sure if it would transfer. Following the installation of the software, I copied the original file from the PC and transferred it to the Mac using a conversion process that Family Tree Maker provides. Behold- It worked perfectly the first time, and I've now safely transferred years of data from my old PC to my new Mac. Using this software will not be difficult because the format is very similar to that of the software I had on my PC. br>br>MACs, as you may know, have their own memory and processing system, but using the software was much easier than I had anticipated. The best part is that, as far as I know, no part of the original family tree has been lost. It's a good thing, too, because I've spent over 15 years working on it. For the Mac, this is an excellent piece of software.
