It is causing an issue
3/5

I purchased Norton Internet Security several years ago; however, this product is not yet ready for release. It's sluggish and irritates the hell out of the user. Maybe I'll be able to run this program in the future, but the resource limitations of Windows 98, my computer, and my existing software prevent me from doing so right now. This product receives two stars from me. br>br>Norton Internet Security,,, ,Windows98,,Windows98,,Windows98,,Windows98,,Windows98,,Windows98,.

If you decide to use this product, make sure to uninstall all other Norton virus and internet security products, even though the instructions state that Norton 2003 will be uninstalled automatically- That's not the case! Since I started using this product, my computer has been crashing more frequently, so my recommendation is to avoid it until they fix it

Another thing to consider is Symantec isn't going to help you with anything technical. They don't even provide adequate free assistance in setting up the product, let alone using it.

Stick to the older NAVs if you can

Around the end of 2004, my wife and I both bought this software. Many of the "features" were initially inconvenient, and I assumed that I would get used to them and move on. That was never the case. br>br>Internet Security mysteriously disabled itself one day while online. I immediately disconnected from the internet, but I couldn't get the program to work again. I contacted Symantec after exhausting all other options, including uninstalling and reinstalling the program. They advised me to do everything I had already done via email (their online automated help is abysmal, by the way). As expected, this resulted in the problem not being solved. The program was still not working after a fresh boot and a registry tweak. Several other programs on my machine returned errors stating that they had encountered problems and "needed to close" at this time, and Outlook had stopped working until I removed the program. I had never seen this error before before Internet Security crashed on me. The fact that the program designed to protect me from any type of Internet attack was also giving me this error was upsetting. br>br>After doing some research online, I came across a couple of articles claiming that Internet Security had a bug that allowed hackers to disable it remotely. This is not the case, according to Symantec. Finally, I uninstalled the program, which resolved most of my issues; however, I'm still getting the strange "this program has encountered a problem and needs to close" error with Adobe Distiller, as well as other programs on occasion; however, only Adobe Distiller appears to be completely fatally affected. br>br>My wife has had issues with her Internet Security and has discovered that turning it off is the best solution. Fortunately, unlike mine, hers did not completely die. br>br>The bottom line is that, in my opinion, this program should be avoided. I've never had any issues with previous versions of NAV, and I'll be going back to them, despite my dislike for Symantec as a whole for producing such a flawed program.

Okay, there's been a mishap with the program

NIS has been on my computer for the last three versions. Overall, it hasn't been a bad product, but Symantec has taken a major step backwards with this release. br>Right now, I'm using a Pentium 4 with a 3. 0GHz clock speed. 5GHz (C stepping with hyperthreading), 1GB RAM, Western Digital Raptors SATA RAID Array on Windows XP Professional I have plenty of system resources to run this application, so that's not a problem. I forgot to mention that I've worked as a Product/Marketing Manager in the PC Hardware and Software industries, and I'm also a MCSE (MS Certified Systems Engineer) and a CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate). For a long time, both professionally and at home, I've worked with hardware and software. I've discovered the following disadvantages: 1) This application consumes a significant amount of system resources. My system became so slow that I began to doubt the hardware's condition. I uninstalled NIS 2004 and replaced it with NIS 2003, which worked flawlessly. 2) A number of websites became inaccessible all of a sudden. Symantec was unable to provide me with any information as to why this was the case. They came up without a hitch after I reinstalled NIS 2003. br>3) For the past two years, I've been requesting Trillian help. Despite the fact that the messenger client has nearly 10 million users and is a legitimate entity, Symantec appears to think it isn't worth their time. In the end, Symantec does not respond to customer requests. I'd have a better chance of getting something from Microsoft if I asked for it. br>4) I was unable to turn on autoprotect @ bootup after exchanging emails with Symantec Support for two weeks. I tried every solution, but no one could explain why. Because the function is built into Intel's Southbridge chipset, I'm guessing it was a compatibility issue with my RAID array. br>5) Norton does not like features turned off, which may be why I've had so many problems; I only want to use it for privacy, cookie management, ad blocking, and antivirus. Anyone familiar with system security knows that relying on a single vendor's products is a bad idea. I have the computer connected to a Linksys router (NAT firewall is far superior to the NIS software firewall), and I use ZoneAlarm for application control and NIS for the features I mentioned above. 6) Ad blocking is only partially effective. For the past three years, Symantec has promoted it as a feature, but I have yet to see a good implementation. Also, if you enable ad blocking and then go into the options, you'll notice that NIS does not disable ads from specific adservers during setup and configuration. Anyone for some kickbacks? You must manually block them (in the options menu). br>7) The activation scheme is unacceptable, as stated by my other esteemed reviewers. I won't buy separate versions for my two desktops and two laptops because I like to keep up with the latest computer hardware and swap out components frequently, so only being able to activate the product five times is unacceptable. Another factor that influenced my decision to return the software was this. Not to mention, the process of getting a refund pretty much put a stop to me ever buying another Symantec product for a long time. br>I would recommend waiting a month or two to see if the bugs are fixed, buying NIS 2003, or looking for another solution on the market.
