Questions & Answers

Is it OS X 10 compatible?

Yes, I'm working with a number of tens. On this software, I have a 7 without any problems.

Is it possible for me to use this to reconcile my bank account?

Yes, this is possible. Quicken Essentials for Mac is where I keep track of our checking and savings accounts, and we just finished balancing both accounts for the month of January. I had two (2) programs running at the same time, one in Win7 and the other on the Imac, solely to test the Mac program. It was a huge success.

What Quicken products work with Mountain Lion on the iMac?

Quicken Essentials and Quicken 2007 are, as far as I'm aware, Mountain Lion compatible. If you search the Quicken website for Mountain Lion compatibility, you'll find a page (deeply hidden) where you can buy Quicken 2007. If you're not familiar with Quicken and haven't used it in years, like I have, look into other options.

What are your thoughts on it as a retirement planning tool? Organizing and forecasting expense and income categories over a time period?

You may be aware, Marty, that Quicken's PC version includes extensive financial planning capabilities. Unfortunately, there isn't a Mac version. While the Mac version currently provides budgeting and budget analysis in a very simple manner, the PC version provides more robust capabilities. If you're a Mac user, you might want to consider installing Windows on a partition and then using the Quicken PC versions that are appropriate for your needs. br>Believe me when I say that this is beneficial. br>With heartfelt gratitude, JL

Warning: There is no support for Mac Lion, and no check printing is available
3/5

This is an OLD (1. ) version of the application. Quicken Essentials is a program that allows you to keep track of your finances. At least, that's how the copy I got looked. Mountain Lion (version 10) is the operating system that I use. 3) As a result, it does not work - Power is most likely required. PC emulation, which Lion does not support; however, there is rumored to be an updated version (1. ) but - But there's a catch: The update program crashed while trying to read data when I attempted to update the software. As a result, it may be effective with 1. 5 or 1. 6. However, I am unaware of this - I have a couple of Macs running OS X. It gets a 5 out of 6 and is worth a shot. I'll get back to you as soon as I'm finished. br>br>NOTE: THIS PAGE HAS BEEN UPDATED. I've finally figured out how to print checks! BUT, here's what I had to do. br>First and foremost, the included software for updating my Quickbooks data to the QE does not work on Mountain Lion (it most likely requires PowerPC emulation). So, if you're lucky enough to still have OS 10, you're in luck. 5 or 10. 6 After that, you should update the data in Quickbooks (or earlier versions of Quicken). After that, copy the data file (which has the extension. I believe it's qdfx) to your Mountain Lion 10. br>THE NEXT STEP: QE (1. ) must be installed. x) However, DO NOT import the data file. br>THIRD: Update the QE via the internet - to QE 1. br>SECOND: NOW import the qdfx data file. br>This works for me, and I've printed a few dozen checks so far. To be honest, I preferred the Quickbooks procedures, but that could simply be a matter of acclimating to the new method. Everything seems to be in working order - However, I haven't attempted to create an annual report (which I use to collect data for taxes at the end of the year). Hopefully, this will also work.

It's a letdown! After recently purchasing a MacBook Pro, I was hoping to break the PC's stranglehold on my life
3/5

I'd been using Quicken since 2003, so I was hoping that Quicken for Mac would make the transition easier. Not so! br>br>While I don't use Quicken for bank reconciliation, investment tracking, or any of the other online services, I was disappointed to learn that this version of Quicken is incapable of producing a simple register and or category report, which is standard in every version of Quicken for PC I've ever used, up to and including the 2011 version. br>br>My solution was simple: I trashed Quicken for Mac and installed Parallels and a fresh install of Windows 7 on a virtual machine, giving me the best of both worlds. Once I installed Quicken 2011 on the virtual machine, I had the best of both worlds. Quicken and the grace and speed of a Mac are a match made in heaven. br>br>I wouldn't recommend Quicken for Mac until they make a concerted effort to improve it!.

Intuit, like New Coke, appears to have lost touch with its clientele

FAILURE OF THE CENTURY For the past four years, I've been using Quicken for Mac 2006 (QM 2006), as well as previous versions. It serves as a database for statistical analysis in Excel, as well as a place to record and reconcile our checking, savings, and credit card accounts. I don't use it to pay bills or manage investments because of some bad experiences, but I've been pleased with how well it works in my workflow. QM 2006, on the other hand, is a PowerPC program, so I decided to upgrade to Quicken Essentials for Mac (QEM 2010) to eliminate the need for Rosetta to run legacy PPC programs on my late 2009 iMac. I was very disappointed to discover that Quicken Essentials was so crippled that I couldn't wait to return it to Intuit for a refund. A 60-minute session is included. day 100% customer satisfaction guarantee on their products which is about the only thing they got right on this one they got right on this one they got right on this one they got right% br>br>SHOWSTOPPERSbr>* Cannot turn off the recording of future scheduled transactions in account registers, which allowed us to compare the Quicken checkbook balance to our paper register (this does not include future variable-valued transactions). The recording of scheduled transactions before their scheduled date can be done manually in QM 2006 if you want, but it is not the default and there is no way to turn it off. br>* No way to export data for analysis in another application, as in QM 2006 Quick Report; Intuit's QEM 2010 webpage disclaimer states that Quicken data cannot be exported to Turbo Tax, but it does not imply that there is no export functionality at all. br>* Can't get rid of no-longer- Payees were used to reduce the number of payees on the list without removing them from the transactions. This, I suppose, means that the payee list must be allowed to grow indefinitely, eventually becoming unmanageable. Adding or removing payees from the Quick Fill List in QM 2006 has no effect on previously recorded transactions. br>br>ANNOYANCESbr>* Unlike previous versions of Quicken, there is no way to password-protect the QEM data file. br>* Unlike Quicken 2006 Quick Reports, reports do not have the ability to subtotal by payee or time period. br>* Despite the fact that QEM 2010 only runs on an Intel processor, the Quicken File Exchange Utility on the install CD for converting your existing qdfm data file is a PPC application, so you're back to Rosetta. br>br>If Intuit releases some major upgrades, such as making the interface more like the older checkbook style, I might reconsider Quicken Essentials for Mac in the future. Instead of just the pretty graphs, I would have been hesitant to buy into this disaster if I had seen screenshots of the new GUI (which, interestingly, are not shown on the Intuit product website). Sorry, Intuit; I really wanted to like it, but Quicken Essentials for Mac is not at all necessary. br>br>3/16/2010 UPDATE: I appreciate how quickly Intuit refunded my money. In addition, Quicken 2006 for Mac continues to function flawlessly for me to this day. If Intuit doesn't plan to upgrade regular Quicken for Mac to a Universal or Intel application, I just hope Apple maintains support for PPC applications in Mac OS X. br>br>4/19/2010 UPDATE: I noticed that Intuit has reduced the price from $69. 00 to $20. Between $99 and $499 It's still way too expensive for what it does (and doesn't). br>br>6/5/2010 UPDATE: I noticed that the Quicken Blog ([. ]) has been updated. The following updates would be released within a week, according to ]) on 4/26/2010: "The immediate updates you'll see this week!" br>"The immediate updates you'll see this week!" ) is the ability to do the following: br>* Use passwords to secure files. br>* For further analysis, export transaction data to spreadsheets. "br>br>As far as I'm aware, no such updates have been made available. What a load of nonsense. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Intuit to make Essentials usable, given how long it took them to get from Quicken 2007 to Essentials. In the meantime, you won't be able to export Essentials data to the old Quicken, so you'll have to re-enter your information. If you reach the same conclusion as me, my advice is to avoid purchasing this product or, if you already have, to return it for a refund. This is an EPIC FAIL, and Intuit needs to know it.
