There is no way to know for certain what is inside the thermometer. There was one thermometer inside the tank that broke and I didn't realize it for several hours until it is finally noticed. It did not harm the fish in any way. The reason for your question is probably that you are afraid your fish will be injured, so I hope this explains it all for you.

The purchase was not made by me, and I have no connection whatsoever with anyone who may have earned even a single penny through it. I just thought I'd mention it. Since I have kept aquariums for about 45 years, I'm no novice. It is the best magnet thermometer on the market under the right circumstances. This idea will leave you wondering why it wasn't thought of earlier. It can be put anywhere in the tank you wish and it can be relocated at will at will, even from one tank to another if you wish. Whenever you look at it, you will see it right where you last put it. It is easily readable as well. It would appear that these are not calibrated to any accuracy and can not be trusted to determine the temperature of an aquarium. Putting a magnet on the outside of the thermometer to keep it in place is a good idea but ultimately fails when the water temperature is too high. This thermometer is a total waste of money and could result in fish loss, which could cost you a lot of money.
I like this little thermometer a lot. In addition to its size and width, it is roughly six inches long and an inch wide. It has contrasting black numbers and temperatures that make it easy to read.
