I have a rescued Catahoula dog (M) of about 6 or 7 years of age and I have a rescued Black Lab (F) of about 16 years of age. She paces herself well while eating, as she does so well. We are feeding our Catahoula dog moistened dry food every 18 seconds. If he is not physically stopped, he will eat a 2 cup meal in less than a minute. The timing is right (we timed it). The Catahoula dog had pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dehydration, and unusual blood work values and was dead within hours. We are not yet sure how the illness occurred. In a veterinary hospital, he was on an IV, on meds, on NPO, supportive care and, on one occasion, nearly died. The incident made our family sick as we had lost a beloved Malamute to pancreatitis about 15 years ago. Imagine a terrible gastro illness, with blood coming out of both ends, lethargy, dehydration, and not being able to sleep. Fortunately, he wasn't able to collapse before we got him to the vet. We purchased a Petco bowl when we realized our Catahoula was likely to survive with great vetinary care (thank G*d) and decided, along with all the meds and directions for frequent, small meals, that this would also be helpful. This was agreed upon by our vet. Her assessment was that this Slow Feed bowl should certainly assist him in his recovery, even though fasting did not cause his recent condition.
He has been home for several days now, and he has dropped from eating 1/2 cup of chicken and rice (homemade) to 4-1/2 cups more than before The time is five It does help him to eat more slowly as he systematically works his way around the bowl, trying to find and eat all of the items, and he works fairly slowly. I am sure that this bowl will continue to be used after he has recovered. In fact, the best part (aside from the look on the dog's face when we first put this bowl on the floor) is that our slower eating Black Lab is now pacing around the kitchen, waiting for him to finish so they can go outside to go potty. As a child, she used to finish last and decide when they were to be taken out for dinner after dinner. In my opinion, you should clean this bowl as soon as your dog is done eating so food does not accumulate on the edges and nooks. Watered dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle is sprayed onto ours, let it sit for a minute, then we rinse it several times until no residual soap is left. It is a beautiful bowl, and we are very pleased with it. Our little boy is recovering from a serious illness thanks to this, and he is improving his health as well. He eats out of this spiral bowl, and it's kind of entertaining to watch him do that. (-) I hope your dog does not have to suffer a serious disease like our Catahoula dog did before the innovative design in safer animal feeding was developed. It would have been better if we had purchased one earlier.
This prevents them from getting sick because they are being too fast and hurried. Food is held in the bowl at an equal level at the top of the bowl in two full cups.
When our slow eater pup cannot finish his food, my pit bull tries to steal food from him. I have to flip the bowl for her last kibble bites, as the feeder slows her down enough but is too narrow for her mouth. She eats all her kibble as long as I flip the bowl, but she doesn't eat all of it. Does that sound like the kind of thing a smaller dog would enjoy? The bowl I've got now is alright for now. I'll probably buy a new one with less grooves later to accommodate my dog better, but for now, this one will do.
Then read on! As he learns to get everything, he gets better at it.
The quality is excellent.
I love the way it works.
It is easy to clean and is slow to release the dog. Besides the standard size, I have a large one in the shape of The only drawback is that it is harder to clean than this.
The problem is not an issue.
