My dad, the handyman, says that if you use a drywall anchor designed to hold a lot of weight, you should be fine; my second shelf won't have any studs, but my anchors will hold 159 pounds. However, the shelf, like the first shelf I purchased, is sized to hit both studs in a typical house.
The shelves are made of heavy-duty materials. They are appealing to me. There are three of them in total. I'm a 20-pound woman. He and his slightly younger sister, a 3' Maine coon, both adore them. The shelves themselves are well-made, in my opinion. Nothing is loose or wobbly, and everything is very well connected. To give my three cats more play space in my smaller 2-bedroom apartment, I ordered two leaves and one branch. Apartment with one bedroom. My cats don't adore them, but one of them does, and he climbs up to snooze and watch his brothers from a higher perch, perhaps because they like to pick on him. I adore the look, and my cat does as well. Tip: Do not attempt to mount this heavy shelf to the wall using the pre-drilled holes. Anchor bolts were used to drill holes through sheetrock. It is going to fall off. Rather, disregard any pre-existing conditions. Drill your own holes to align with the 2x4s in the wall instead of using pre-drilled holes. The screw holes are designed to be directly screwed into studs, and it's a very secure installation. After I helped lead my cats to it, it took a couple of hours for them to try it out, but it's now occupied by a cat almost 24 hours a day. It's been a few weeks since I got it, and the kitties still love it - I'm hoping to buy the larger shelf or cat tree in the future because it's very nice (not your typical cat furniture look).
