The chemicals in DEET are harsh to my skin, so I avoid using it. I dislike mosquitoes too, but I also hate being eaten alive by them. The problem can ruin the mood of a lovely evening! In any case. In a test of three insect repellents, I found that they were all effective. I decided to switch to an all-natural brand that contained citronella, geranium, cedar and peppermint the first night I tried it. It is supposed to be repellent to insects to use all the natural scents. I was bit by the beast to the point of being covered in bite marks. My second night of trying this stuff (25% DEET) I found it ineffective. I found it to be very helpful. My boyfriend kissed my shoulder and his lips tingled and tasted awful (I don't recall eating any of it!). The smell was horrible and I doubt I got a bite, but the flavor was There was no way I could get that into my sheets and pores without taking a shower first! After I had tried 7% DEET for two nights, I came back to 7% DEET on my THIRD NIGHT and found it just right. I found it to be helpful- was bitten only on my hand and neck, in places where I had forgotten to spray my hand and neck. I was happy with the scent and feel of it on my skin. I wasn't antsy to get in the shower as soon as I got into the house. The difference would probably be more apparent in a mosquito situation that is more intense. A tool like this could be essential in the backwoods.
