These are painted metal, but they don't appear to be galvanized or anything, so I'm sure they'll rust over time, just like any other painted metal item in the outdoors. Having said that, the paint job is excellent - They don't appear to have any obvious flaws, so I expect them to last a long time. I've had mine up for about 6 months and I'm really happy with it!
I don't have any pictures because I'm too short to get a good shot of what's going on in my gutter (haha), but here's what I recall: The top piece is shaped like a cross bar, which you insert vertically into the gutter's drain hole before making it horizontal to prevent it from falling through. Mine has stayed put even in the face of torrential rain and strong winds.

This is a very high-quality product that offers incredible value for the money. Even in a downpour, this chain avoids splashing by gently guiding the water downward. These were incredibly simple to set up. My husband completed the installation in under 20 minutes, including the removal of the old downspout. Buy one! It'll make you happy.
It is simple to put together. I took a few from the bottom and placed them elsewhere just to make it look nice.
