You will not save any energy by rolling it up - Whether it's rolled up or flat, the mat uses the same amount of energy. The heat is controlled by the controller's temperature probe.
This mat is placed beneath a mesh nest box with foam insulation and plywood underneath, but the eggs do not get warm. We haven't seen temperatures below 0F yet, so no frozen eggs.
Yes, to some extent. On open wire shelving, a lot of the heat is naturally lost to the air, but depending on the ambient temperatures outside, some of it is still absorbed by the pots and the roots of your orchids.
I kept mine on a plastic folding table and it didn't get too hot. If I were you, I'd put a towel or something underneath for some added cushion, but it's not particularly hot.

I just got this mat and it's currently sitting on top of two 72 pod starter pots. I ordered a thermometer to turn it off, but I don't think I'll need it. I've had it running for a few hours and it maintains a consistent warm temperature that isn't too hot. The mat temperature remains constant at 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while the soil temperature in the greenhouses above remains constant at 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Seeds are sprouting in the green house I started a few days ago, indicating that they are enjoying the warmth. I'm seriously thinking about ordering another. This is an excellent gardening tool for those who plant warm-weather crops such as tomatoes or peppers. In our 69° house, it was difficult to get tomatoes and peppers to sprout, but once I placed them on the heat mat, they usually sprouted in three days. If you're lucky, you'll have six days. I haven't needed to use a thermostat for this, but once the seeds have sprouted, I take them out of the heat and place them under grow lights.
Then I noticed that the right side of the mat was no longer warming up. I didn't get it wet, and I followed the directions to the letter. The left side of the mat is now losing its ability to heat up. Because this one will be thrown away soon, I'll have to buy a new heating mat in the spring. It was purchased because it was very long and would fit my two seed trays side by side; however, it was of poor quality and was poorly constructed. It was a waste of money!.
Excellent heating mat it started all my seedlings wonderfully just make sure you have a tray with water underneath the seedlings so that they steam and keep the roots from drying out because this warms up 30 degrees above the air temperature so a 70 degree room can reach over a hundred which is a little too much it would be nice to have a thermostat on it but I did well I did not lose any seedlings all in all a great product and the size is grade you can pu.
While the mat appears to be functional, I purchased it because it was a Hydrofarm heating mat with excellent reviews. This is not a Hydrofarm heating mat, so I gave it a low rating.
This is a fantastic product. I use it to heat up multiple 1 gallon jars for betta fish and it works perfectly. It maintains a comfortable temperature for them without being too hot. The pad can reach 100 degrees at its hottest, but the glass jars keep the water at a comfortable 80 degrees. I adore this pad.
I bought two of these for my greenhouse, and they're great; you have to unplug them to turn them off, but that's not difficult, and the plants are doing great. It's just as good as the one I paid a lot more for several years ago.
This is a fantastic heat mat for the price. It's actually what we use in a nest box to keep the eggs from freezing. The mat is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit, which keeps the eggs around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, even when the outside temperature is near 0 degrees Fahrenheit. It turns out that you can put a few screws through the mat and it will still work. However, I would not advise you to do so.
