As I do not live near a beach, I did not find a need to purchase the expensive metal scoop with handles. During my one trip throughout the year I buy this, and it works like a charm. It didn't take long for me to dig over a hundred holes. It has held up well after removing lots of 3/4" landscaping gravel from our backyard for days! At first I was hesitant about how durable this product is, but after using it for days it has exceeded my expectations! It worked even better than sifting the gravel along with dirt and debris through one of those mesh screen pans or colanders. Anything made of plastic would normally be extremely aggressive when exposed to 3/4 inch gravel. There's nothing not to love about it, is there? In southern California, I use it as a sand scoop to catch sand crabs for fishing the surf. My purpose is served well by the device, and it's easy to drain and its holes are the perfect size. I highly recommend this book.
We have made two PVC scoops using 6 inch sections of PVC, and they are holding up well.
