It is possible to separate the trays. The mesh tray I needed was the only one I purchased.
The size will depend on how small you want your items to be, but you will be best off with 1/8 and 1/4.

A sifting pan like this one helped me clean my buckwheat hull pillows of their hulls. A fine, brown dust can be found inside the case as buckwheat hulls break down after a while.
