Questions & Answers

Can I wrap this around a one gallon flower pot to keep the soil warm during the winter months for a rare topical plant I have?

Because the temperature is hovering around 70 degrees, I'm sure you could. You could place the planter inside another container, with the heater sandwiched between the two! Just make sure the plant pot is big enough for the root system, because the warmth will keep your plant growing all winter.

Is anyone making kefir with this?

The ideal temperature is 37 degrees Celsius (98 degrees Fahrenheit). Kefir will benefit from a little extra heat if the ambient temperature is at or above body temperature. It won't grow at temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit (68 degrees Fahrenheit) or above 45 degrees Fahrenheit (113 degrees Fahrenheit). br>Please keep in mind that the 3" x 20" strips will wrap around a 6-foot table. 7" jar.

Is this product listed with the Underwriters' Laboratories (UL)?

There is no UL certification on this product. This item bears the CE certification mark, which is a European standard. br>CE Conformité Européenne is comparable to our UL Listed, but not identical—similar to the three UL classifications. UL listed, UL recognized, and UL classified are the three levels of certification.

How do you wrap this strip around the brewing jar to keep it in place?

I secure mine with a rubber band, but you could also use Velcro strips or gaffer's tape. If you're making kombucha or another similar beverage, whatever you do, don't put the jar on the heating pad, as another user suggested. That is the absolute last thing you should do. This will stop yeast from growing and ruin the batch. Temperature variations will be greater throughout the container.

It's like a seed germination cheat code
5/5

If you're on the fence about using a heating mat or think it's a waste of money. Please pay attention to what I'm saying. When germinating seeds, I've previously used a combination of water soaking, paper towel method, jiffy pellets, root riots, or direct planting. Within 48 hours, the quickest techniques establish initial tap roots from seed. 72 hours (water soak and paper towel) before carefully transferring to a new medium (jiffy, root root, soil, etc. ) and waiting for the "seed pop" as it sprouts from the growing medium. This can take another 48 hours or more in most cases. 72 hours, depending on the medium's environment and the environment around it. br>Since starting to use this heat mat, I've produced a personal best "seed pop" from the growing medium in only 58 hours! I've attached a few photos to demonstrate my results. These go great with the plastic jiffy pellet houses and create the ideal humid/warm environment for seeds to germinate quickly. If you want to shorten your germination time by a few days, I strongly advise you to try this mat.

After a year of use, it caught fire! This caught fire and would have burned down my house if I hadn't been home and my extremely sensitive Nest smoke detectors hadn't alerted me immediately
3/5

Don't leave it unattended while it's running.

REMEMBER TO GET THE CONTROLLER AS WELL
5/5

This has accomplished precisely what it set out to do. Keeps my kombucha at the perfect temperature, but get the "VIVOSUN Digital Seedling Heat Mat Thermostat Controller" so you don't have to keep an eye on it. Without the controller, the mat will not turn off and will provide continuous heat.

I plugged it in (with a thermostat) about a week ago, and it worked perfectly until this morning
3/5

In the spring of 2017, I used it for about 6 weeks. It was kept flat on a shelf indoors after each use until this spring. I plugged it in (with a thermostat) about a week ago and it worked fine, but when I checked it this morning, I noticed the thermostat wasn't keeping the temperature I set. When I removed the trays, I discovered that the mat had burned a hole in it as well as a dark spot on the towel it was resting on. I'm lucky there wasn't a fire. br>br>I contacted Vivosun via the customer service number on the package, and they took my information and are replacing the mat and thermostat. I will use their mats on cement and isolated surfaces in the future, but their customer service was outstanding.

A temperature controller is something I used and would strongly recommend
3/5

This is what I ordered to get my Impatiens seeds started. The first thing I noticed is that the center 10" of the mat gets much warmer than the rest. I used a calibrated thermometer to check the temperature, which reached 106 degrees, as shown in the photo. Granted, this is at the mat rather than near the cell's top, where the seeds are. I don't see how the heat from the mat wouldn't eventually transfer to the top of the cell pack and cook the seeds if it was running 24 hours a day to maintain heat. A temperature controller is something I used and would strongly recommend. For around $35, I purchased an Inkbird 308 The controller must be plugged into the wall, and the mat must be plugged into the controller. With the temperature probe about 1" into the soil, I set it to 75 degrees. I got almost 100% germination in about a week using Ferry Morse seeds, and I credit the success to the combination of the mat and controller, but I can not say the% It works well as a pair.

This is what I use to make two gallons of kombucha on the go
5/5

This is what I use to make two gallons of kombucha on the go. Because my house is cold, I needed some kind of heat source. I used this wrapped around my jar with a timer to keep it at a perfect 75 degree temperature. It's ideal for my setup! The product appears to be of good quality, similar to reptile heater pads, and the cord is super long, far longer than reptile heater pads, making it ideal for where I have it (nearly impossible to reach a plug). Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. br>br>UPDATE: I've had this heat pad for six years, starting in 2015. For my kombucha, it's still working perfectly. I've also used it for seedlings and found it to be very effective. Because the newer version appears to be different, it's possible that they improved the older versions, as I've heard that the newer version is causing problems for many people.

I was able to assist a first-time gardener
5/5

This is my first year trying to start my own garden, and with the COVID19 quarantine making it difficult to buy plants, I decided to try starting some from seed. Because I don't have a green thumb, I did a lot of research and discovered that starting seeds indoors and keeping the soil warm and moist increases the likelihood of seeds sprouting. My zucchini, tomato, and cucumber plants sprouted after three days of using this heating mat!.

If you purchase a thermostat to go with it, it works perfectly
5/5

Seedling heat mats DO INCREASE GERMINATION RATE, but they also require a seedling heat mat THERMOSTAT. Because I had a seedling heat mat with no thermostat, I killed and/or prevented the germination of many of my first round of seedlings. They simply became overheated. If you're going to use a seedling heat mat, you should also get a thermostat. I had a 95% germination rate when I FINALLY broke down and got the thermostat. I 100% had success with my Jalapeno's, which I hear are infamously difficult to germinate. The Brandywine Red was the most difficult to germinate, and I'm blaming it on the seeds/type of plant because only three of the six or seven seeds I planted germinated. Squash, zucchini, San Marzano tomatoes, Sun Gold tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers, on the other hand, germinated beautifully! br>br>With it, I used this thermostat. The photo was taken on Day 5 after the seeds were planted. So it's clear they got rid of the heat mat quickly.
