This is for heating 8 inches of substrate in a 36 gallon habitat for hermit crabs. With it, you can heat the substrate and keep the appropriate temperature in the tank. It fits under the tank easily and provides enough heat for the substrate.

In my experience, a heat mat could only warm seedling packs to a few degrees when I tried it with a tray of seedling packs. With a temperature setting of 80, our house is 70°F while the soil reached 73°F when the thermostat is set at 70°F. Under the cardboard, I tried to stabilize it, but to no avail. I then put it in a cardboard box and I was able to get it working. There is an aluminum cookie sheet containing the cell packs inside the box and a heat mat. Heat can spread better through the aluminum tray than a plastic tray, because aluminum is more heat-dispersing than plastic. In addition, I cover the cell packs with a plastic bag to prevent moisture from escaping. The ETA is The company was very competent in the area of customer service. In terms of length, the mat fits my seed starting tray perfectly. Finding an appropriate place to put the thermometer to get an accurate reading is challenging, and I honestly do not know what the temperature of the soil is since what the controls say is extremely different from how it actually feels. The mat, however, did help me germinate a lot more seeds than I would have if I had not used it. We are satisfied with the mat, but were disappointed with the temperature control.

It heats evenly and is a great size. I really like the thermostat because it keeps the temperature constant and shuts off when a desired temperature A good length of cord makes it easy to position.

We don't have a working thermometer

There is a problem with the temperature control. The temperature was set to 82 degrees Fahrenheit on the control. However, the mat exceeded 85 degrees before turning off, even though it was plugged in, the thermometer was up and away from the mat. A slight drop in temperature followed, then the mat was turned back on at 80 degrees. Though the thermometer indicated the temperature was rising, it continued to fall. Using the heat mat on its own is a great experience. It is not clear what to do with the thermostat instructions. In the instructions, there are instructions for easier to understand commands, but there is no information on troubleshooting when the temperature gage fails to work. The brand I used to purchase is faulty, and I'm going to return for a new one.

In an insulated box, the mat is used to maintain the solar battery bank at its ideal temperature. I have not been able to locate any issues with the installation instructions or the functioning unit.
