Questions & Answers

What country does it come from?

China is the source of some Gerber products. Gerber used to make all of their products in Portland, Oregon. After a Finnish company bought them out, they began to have some of their items made in China, while others were made in Finland. It should be clearly labeled where the item was made.

What is the weight of the shovel?

Gerber's E-Zip Weights of the tool folding shovel The weight is 55 pounds. If you're backpacking, it'll be a little heavy, but it'll be useful to keep in your car's trunk for emergencies or car camping. Mine is in the trunk of my car at all times. Made in Portland, Oregon, this is a fantastic product.

Is the "L" position locked in?

Both yes and no. It is locked in the "L" position, but only at a 75-degree angle. The temperature is at 85°F. The same can be said about the entire rotation. It's around 170 square feet. In comparison to the straight 90 and 180 degree settings, I find the angles to be superior for digging.

Is the locking mechanism as prone to seizing as the e-tools from the USGI? Despite regularly oiling the usgi version I own, it remains unlocked. ?

Yes, I have a natural tendency to seize. My boyfriend uses this tool frequently and has never had an issue with it; in fact, I am capable of using it as well. It is simple to open and operate.

Excellent off-the-shelf emergency solution tool for the road This little device folds up small enough for me to keep it in my car, tucked away in a small emergency box where I keep some road and off-road emergency supplies
5/5

To get me out of trouble, I'm going to need some road items. br>It came in handy this winter when I got my Cherokee stuck (basically beached) and had to literally dig the car out of the small hill. I couldn't have done it without this incredibly strong and durable trenching tool, even though the ground was frozen and it was 28 degrees outside. By hand or with a wooden stick, it would have taken me 6 hours. In addition, the plastic handle kept my hands from coming into contact with the cold metal. Which I greatly appreciated. br>I'm going to buy a second one so that someone else can help me dig next time. And a third to have on hand in case anything goes wrong. br>br>Will also make a great gift for anyone you know who may need to drive in dangerous conditions or in bad weather.

A tank in the true sense
5/5

I bought it to use as a snowmobile emergency tool, but I've never used it that way. I have, however, used it to dig my truck out of a snowbank and remove a trespasser's dug-in U post, the latter requiring me to use a rock as a fulcrum, place the shovel blade under the protruding edge of the u post, and then jump onto the shovel handle multiple times (all 200 lbs of me). br>br>It's scratched, but it's still fully functional and as good as new.

Gerber E- Tool
5/5

I'm glad I went ahead and bought it. I've already got a military E-mail address. I wanted to get another tool because the one I had was starting to fall apart and I didn't want to spend $60 on it, so I went with this model. Gerber produces some excellent multi-purpose products. After reading some reviews on this product and my previous experience with their other products, I felt confident enough to purchase it. I live in the mountains, and I used it on a camping trip last weekend to dig a fire pit and post holes, and it worked perfectly. Even though another review claimed it didn't, the shovel does lock at an angle (though not quite 90 degrees). ) Even if it's still muddy, it's very simple to fold and unfold. It feels very sturdy and comfortable in the hands when locked in either position. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. However, I do wish it came with a carrying case. Later on, I'll go get one.

Shovel is quite good
4/5

It's a good entrenching tool that can be carried around with you. I folded it up and stowed it behind the seat of my pickup in case of an emergency or whenever I need a small shovel, such as when cutting roots out of fence post holes. This is what I'll say: I paid fifty dollars to this seller only a year ago, and now I see it is 40% more expensive. I wouldn not buy it at this price. It's just a tiny shovel that folds up. What's going on here?.

The shovel is indestructible, overbuilt, and built like a tank
5/5

I bought it to dig out fire pits or scrape out cockle burs, and to have a place to camp for the night in one of our field edges, near a woods. br>I'm looking forward to doing some dutch oven cooking and dealing with the coals for the lid and bottom. br>br>I really wanted this to come with the pick, but it wasn't available on Amazon. That would be ideal for farm field work, such as removing stones. br>br>I used to have two other shovels from the Korean War that had straight wood handles and folded. That was a waste of time. I've tried the TSC version, which is a gerber-like version. This thing is a tank in every sense of the word. This purchase has made me giddy.

This is an excellent tool that is well worth the investment
5/5

The money was well spent. On the advice of friends, I upgraded to the Gerber, and I'm not disappointed. This device took the place of a low-cost Army-issued weapon. While it worked, the Navy store version was considerably flimsier than the Gerber. br>br>The Gerber is well balanced and weighted. br>The edges can be sharpened and have retained the edge that I applied, making cutting through tree roots much easier. br>The locking mechanism is solid and does not loosen up when driving it into the ground like the cheaper version did. br>br>Based on my first impressions, I expect this tool to handle the tasks I'll throw at it while backpacking, camping, and off-roading. roading.

This is the best camping and small utility shovel I've ever used
5/5

This is something I keep in my backpack for hiking and camping, and I love it. It's a little on the pricey side, but it's well-made and folds up small enough to fit in almost any bag. I've had no difficulty digging small fire pits or simply uprooting small items. It isn't particularly heavy for a shovel of this rigidity. It's probably not as strong as the all-metal ones (the ones that are well-made), but it's a lot lighter. Those army surplus shovels are probably a lot more durable, but they're also a lot heavier, and let's be honest, it's a small shovel. It'll be used for small shovel jobs rather than landscaping or trench digging. It's a small, lightweight utility shovel that's incredibly handy and fits easily into any hiking or "bug out" bag. Gerber has done an outstanding job. In the future, I'm likely to purchase more of these.

Sharpening is required, and there is no case or cover included
4/5

This shovel is familiar to anyone who has played "Served. " The military version is the one with the most options. We rarely used the pick feature unless it was for combat training. So I chose this one, which is $20 cheaper than the "pick" version and a good deal at $47 per unit. The serrated edge of the shovel blade, on the other hand, is not sharp and ready to use. Before you pack it away, you'll need to spend some time on this.
