I went with a darker stain to match the 2"x10" treated box I built underneath. I was also planning on caulking it. If one of the panes breaks, I'll replace it with plexiglass. I spent a little more than the cold frame itself to ensure that it would last the rest of my life. No box is perfectly square when it is made. That is something you must do. If you expect this to be in the $300 range, buying it first saved me a lot of time and effort. Do not purchase the 00 box. Purchase a $300 investment. 00 box. You can, however, turn this into a very useful tool.
I'm not sure why this has so many negative reviews. It's clear that this isn't a $300 fully insulated cold frame, and it won't provide the same level of protection as a heated greenhouse. Duh. Stop being a scrooge if you want it. This is a great cold frame for hardening off and protecting seedlings before transplanting. I live in zone 6b and have 6 week old tomato plants in my gardman cold frame waiting to be transplanted in April. It's in the 50s during the day, but it's mostly in the 30s at night. I have had no cold damage to my tomato plants, and they are growing and thriving in their little house outside in the sunshine, which is insulated at the bottom with a layer of hay and maintains temperatures of 10-degrees Fahrenheit. At night, the temperature inside is 15 degrees warmer than outside. If you don't get up with the sun and crack the vent on sunny days, your plants will quickly become overheated. You can buy weather seal and caulk as well as treat the cold frame to make it more weather resistant, but I didn't do either and it's fine. It's also easy to assemble and spacious. So far, I've really enjoyed it.
It's not perfect, but it's certainly better than nothing. Because nothing is square, the hinged doors don't close completely, so I'll have to buy clips to keep the lids in place. Plastic is extremely inexpensive, and it will not be suitable for use outdoors, as I had hoped. It'll be shredded in a hailstorm because it's so thin. Because it is so light, it will need to be secured in some way or it will blow away. I'm not sure where people get "directions," let alone caulking directions, because there were no instructions other than a small diagram. For the price, one can't expect much, but I had hoped for more. It's best used where there's no hail or snow, just colder weather, as it's unlikely to survive in places like Colorado; on the plus side, it's a good size.
This is a shoddy construction. I had to piece together parts that were supposed to be assembled when I received it, and don't expect it to withstand any kind of wind. This was not a good investment. I wish I could have done it myself.
Although I did need to add a couple of angle corner supports from my local hardware store, this is a lovely cold frame that my plants adore! I took it apart and reassembled it without difficulty when I recently moved.
My wife has been on the medication for three years. It has been stored inside after the spring growing season and is holding up well; I am not sure it would withstand full-time weather, and it must be treated gently; rough handling could cause it to fall apart; however, I would buy it again.
I'm not fond of it. A few of the pieces were damaged when they arrived. It was simple to assemble, but it was extremely flimsy and would not close. This item was returned, and I replaced it with an Ogrow aluminum mini greenhouse, which is far superior to the wooden cold frame.
So far, it's been effective in protecting my herbs on my deck from frost damage. The plexiglass is thin and frosted, making it difficult to see what's inside, but the overall construction is satisfactory. The water drains because it does not have a bottom.
