Questions & Answers

Is it possible to disassemble this item for summer storage?

It was designed to be stored during the summer and used during the winter. It's just not as simple to disassemble as the manufacturer claims. It'll work out.

Is it possible to separate the two sides?

No, it's not true. The two bottom side panels are in two pieces, but if used separately, they would not be very stable. The two top "covers" on the frame are held in place by a single center top metal bar. You could probably improvise something if you're handy, but I wouldn't advise it.

Is there a bottom to this?

It doesn't sit on the ground like all the other cold frames for sale. Just keep in mind that voles can burrow beneath plants and eat them. I've purchased several cold frames over the years, but this one is the best because it's simple to assemble, unlike the Outsunny cold frames, which are nearly impossible to put together. Metal pegs are included to keep it in place in gusty conditions. To keep rodents out, I usually place them on top of a level patio or slide a piece of plywood under them. This model can hold the most plants of any cold frame, with six flats (11"x22") and several individual pots.

Selected User Reviews For Exaco Trading Juwel Easy Fix Double Cold Frame

through the winter with vegetables I like the improvements over the previous version, especially the ability to hold the lid upright while harvesting, which keeps my plants green until the end of December in zone 5 and allows me to start them again in March or April
5/5

This frame will continue to grow greens throughout the winter if placed inside a caterpillar tunnel. Because of the low light, greens in the tunnel stop growing from December to around February, but they stay fresh for harvesting and eating until February, when they begin to grow again. You can do that with just the cold frame if you live in a warmer climate than I do. br>br>To avoid accidentally cooking your vegetables on a sunny day, I recommend using automatic opener arms with the cold frame.

It does not "assemble" in the traditional sense
3/5

After three years and countless videos, emails, reviews, and other research, it appears that the lids of this cold frame are not secure. To put it another way, the idea that the windows could simply "rest" in a channel without snapping in was doomed to fail because it is flimsy and thus never square. br>br>I've tried securing it in various ways (tie-ins, etc. ). The only thing that works is a brick (with gorilla glue and small brads). Which is questionable at best, given the flimsy materials and construction, and the fact that the windows are sloped, something could or could not stay on top of the frame. br>br>The first year, the lids blew off and I lost an entire crop of greens. The second year, I gave up because the 30 minutes it took to refit the lids every time I needed to ventilate the thing was too much for me. (You get one, but the first one falls off while you're putting the other one on. ) CLOSE A COLD FRAME REQUIRES TWO PERSONS! )br>br>I'm thinking of hitting it with a baseball bat this year, I don't know. Then it might be useful for stress relief at the very least.

We've had this greenhouse for a year and it's both sturdy and attractive
5/5

We live in a place where the winds are extremely strong and there is a lot of snow. I wanted to see how they held up before writing a review. They've done a fantastic job so far. They are always around 30 degrees warmer than the ambient temperature. If you need to cool them down, it's simple to vent them. My only gripe was the lack of English in the directions. Looking at the pictures helped my husband figure out how to put it together.

The assembly instructions were terrible, the materials were flimsy, and the size was not 48" as advertised
3/5

I got this a long time ago and finally got around to putting it together before the winter set in. What a dreadful situation - The instructions are extremely small and difficult to follow, especially when it comes to determining which way the metal edge bars should be placed. Although it was for a different model, I found a video on YouTube that was helpful. br>br>The dimensions are off, and it isn't 48" wide, so it won't fit on my raised bed without some alterations. The materials are flimsy to begin with - I doubt it will survive a winter here, as it looks like a piece of plastic cardboard. br>br>It's not worth the money or the time it takes to put it together. If it didn't take so long to start putting it together, I would return it.

This is a fun project that also saves energy
5/5

It was a very good product that was easy to put together and was very light in weight. br>I've dug a fairly large hole, just a little smaller than the perimeter of the cold frame on top and deep enough that I had to roll out of it rather than step out of it. I refilled the hole with fresh manure today and covered it with the cold frame. It will have settled in a few days and I will be able to put my winter plants in it. During the winter, the manure will help to keep it warm. br>Next year, I'll remove the manure and compost it, then replace it with fresh manure in the hole. br>Saves electricity for the cold frame, benefits my garden, and is a good, positive use for manure that would otherwise be a problem. When the weather warms up this summer, I'm thinking about planting tomatoes in it.

Anything Else is a good buy
3/5

This product is a disaster in the making. When constructed, the materials are low-cost and unstable. I spent nearly 45 minutes putting this together without using the instructions (mostly relying on the picture on the box to figure out which parts went where). After everything had been said and done, the structure was completely inadequate. The lids are supported by a support that runs through the top middle of the frame and rests on plastic stands that hold the sides up. Nothing is secure, and the frame is always on the verge of collapsing due to the lack of stabilizing cross structures at the bottom. I tried my hardest to make this work for me because I spent money on it (far too much for the product). I caulked the joints and used logs to weigh down the sides and lids, as well as packing dirt around the edges. The lids blew off and were destroyed after only two days. I strongly advise you to put your money somewhere else.

It took a long time to put this together, but it was well worth the effort
5/5

It was extremely difficult for me to put this together. It took nearly ten hours for me to complete. However, I am not skilled in these areas, and others may be able to complete them more quickly. For me, the issue was a lack of direction. Although there were step-by-step illustrations, there was still a lot to figure out. br>I gave it five stars because it appears to be a good fit. It was too late in the season for me to try growing anything with it. However, I checked the temperature inside, and it appears to retain the sun's heat. I'm using one gallon milk jugs that have been painted black as one of my tricks. br>During the day, they absorb the heat of the sun and then release it at night.

The design is ineffective and unappealing
3/5

I placed an order for two of these cold frames. One box was fine when it arrived. The other was harmed during the shipping process. br>br>Despite its simple design, putting the first one together proved to be more difficult than expected. instructions in a foreign language There is no wiggle room. It's fragile, as it turns out. As a result, I'm not sure how it'll fare in Colorado. br>br>The second one had been harmed - Specifically, the open and close polycarbonate panels for the top. It was impossible to put the top together correctly because of this. br>br>The top panel crossbar assembly must be re-installed. Engineered for ease of assembly as well as increased strength. br>br>This product is not for me.
